How to pick a specific runway with MS ATC.

Featured Replies

I have various tutorials that I'm trying to follow that assume you will be taking off from a specific runway - e.g 22R at EKCH (Kastrup). However when I use the MS ATC I get various choices such as North South East West and Straight out. But no actual runway options. If I select straight out it is invariably another runway (4L).Is there a way to select a specific runway at all?Or do I need to pick at random and hope I get the one I want?Do I need to plan for all the runways so that I can take whats offered?Considering they tell me what runway to use they must know what runways are available. So why don't they just give me the choice!

Hi,Try changing the wind to blow down the runway you want to use! and you might get that one to take off from. Maybe.Andy

>However when I use the MS ATC I get various choices such as>North South East West and Straight out. But no actual runway>options.>The N, S, E, W mentioned here is the direction in which you intend to depart the area not your takeoff direction. For instance, if you were taking off from England and going to Paris, you would ask for a South departure. Which runway you leave from makes no differece except to determine which way you will turn once you are airbourn. If your aim is to select a specific runway for departure, then set the wind direction as Andy suggests. In addition to what the other posters have said, you should be able to request a different runway from the MS ATC after you have been given your taxi clearance. However, you can only select a runway that's actually in use. To find out which ones are being used you need to listen to the ATIS.

Whenever possible in the real world planes take off into the wind so the wind will determine which runways are active. If there are multiple parallel runways active you can request a different runway, but you have to do it before you acknowledge your runway assignment. For example:1. Request taxi for takeoff in whatever direction you want to go.2. ATC will assign you a runway and give you taxi instructions.3. Now, before you acknowledge those taxi instructions, is your chance to change runways. If there are multiple active runways there should be an option added to the bottom of the list saying something like "choose a different runway."4. You chose that option, select a different runway, and then that option changes to "request runway from controller" or something like that. Choose that to actually ask for that runway. You'll hear something like "Cessna N700MS would prefer 22L."5. ATC will give you taxi instructions to your newly chosen runway. Now you can acknowledge the instructions and go takeoff.A simillar procedure can be used to select a different runway for landing. You can even change runways while doing touch and go's. (Between touch and go's.) Keep in mind that addon AFCADs can disable a runway for landing or takeoff, so you might choose the "Choose another runway" option and not see anything listed. And if only one runway is active, you won't get the option at all.Another tip, there is also a "chose another approach" option for landing, that's totally seperate from changing runways, but if you change runways for landing you should probably change to that runway's approach procedure.KSFO is a nice airport for testing multiple active runways, it has 2 sets of parallel runways. (As an interesting sidenote, KDTW can have 4 active runways at the same time, though addon AFCADs are likely to make two of them landing only and two takeoff only..)"Let me help you out. You're cleared to taxi any way you can to any runway you see."
