4K over 1920*1080 - what is the penalty

Has anyone compared fps at both resolutions with all other factors unchanged?

Yes, but the variance will depend on a lot of factors including graphics settings (especially AA) selected (DR, DL, AA, etc.).  This is the testing I did in P3D V3.x ... see Test # 18 vs. #19:

Note SGSS via NI ... everything was the same except the resolution -- I saw about a 21% decrease in FPS with those settings used above going from 1080p to 2160p.  BUT, the most important aspect of running at 4K is that the image quality still looks very good with just 2xMSAA and FXAA enabled.  Typically as you increase resolution you will have less need for high levels of AA, keep in mind AA is really more like a blurr filter so moving away from AA while increasing screen resolution will ultimately improve image quality.  Of course there are other factors involved like head/eye distance from the monitor, etc. etc.

I haven't done this type of testing for P3D V4 in my main FS PC.

I thought 4K=2x1080?

No, it's better to work with pixel count as that's really the meaningful value UHD 4K = 8,294,400 pixels,  HD (1080p) = 2,073,600 pixels ... so in 4K resolutions you are operating 4 times more pixels than HD (1080p).

Cheers, Rob.

Kyle, I also have a 4K TV in my lounge so I'm going to take the PC downstairs in the next few days and try an actual 4K test.

Chris, I already use GPS-X and it shows spare capacity so fingers crossed there won't be more than a 20% hit as shown in Rob's report. I have FTX Global, AS16/ASCA, Heathrow Xtended, UTX Europe and MyTraffic Pro. Ai is limited to 150 using FSUIPC.

Rob, thanks for that. Very helpful. I wonder if the performance hit would be comparable in v4 compared to v3.2. I does suggest I should be okay except for the densest airports and I can always tweak AA and other settings.
