Feel The Speed..........NOT

Featured Replies

When flying in fs9 I am not happy with the feeling of speed I get. When cruising and especially when coming in to land it feels very slow, even though my system is pretty good. So I had an idea to 2X the speed by holding down r and the + sign together just to see what the results were. I was very happy apart from the obvious draw backs, especially when flying fast jets, BUT....Next to real-time, 2X is the lowest increment in which you can increase the speed, I was thinking 1.5x would be ideal so my question is this ( got there eventually )Is there anyway to alter the config file so I can increase the simulator speed by 1.5X instead of 2X, if so please tell me how as I would love to try out the results. If anyone knows how to do this, please explain it to me as simply as possible ( which and how to access the config file e.t.c)I look forward to your replies, and remember, when life gets a little to complicated....just press control + E

Hi,Those values are hard coded into FS.Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development TeamActive Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter

You can change the sensation of speed somewhat by changing the zoom level of your window--if you change the zoom level to about .75-.8, this will make the periphery of your 3-d world seem to move by faster. Changing the sim rate to 2X makes the sim half as realistic....you are making the aircraft fly "faster" through the 3-d world, not changing the visual cues that change the sense of speed. My CFI likes to fly pretty fast on final so we're not overtaken by faster aircraft, but even at 80kts, it seems like it takes an eternity to get to the runway. I think the sensation of speed I see in MSFS is pretty realistic given the level of detail it displays. Even more so, if you look to the side on takeoff or approach.-John

what type of planes are you flying?the weird thing is, real flying feels slow too. When i'm flying in my cessna in RL, it feels like i'm moving 10 mph..even though i'm going 115kts. Sometimes it doesn't even feel like i'm moving at all. I still remember back when i took my first lesson. I told the instructor that the sensation of flying felt "fake." She agreed...until we hit some turbs and reality hit. haha...you don't feel the speed because there are no objects near you to compare movement too. You are thousands of feet above groud, so the biggest objects around you are mountains, lakes, etc. And unless you are in a jet, those objects will move by you very slowly.if you want speed, just break some virtual rules and fly at 300 feet AGL. You'll definitely feel the speed then.-fz

Hi, thanks for all your replies.I guess i'll just have to fly low and skim the cows a bit more.Gotta go, my wife thinks I spend far too much time on flight simulator...nag nag nag, wish I could CTRL-SHIFT-F2 and shut her down.cheers.

Get a good cloudset, I find that skimming the ceiling with a good cloudset gives a good feeling of speed.

I think it's pretty close to the real thing. Watch videos of planes taking off and you'll see it never looks that fast there either. Just as in a car, looking out the front window is a huge difference from looking out the side windows.

peripheral vision plays a huge part in that sense of speed, and peripheral vision is something that's pretty much lacking when you're viewing the world through a 17, 19, or 20 inch window.

Set the zoom to 0.5, that will give you a much better feeling of speed.

Look up in the "real" sky at a jet leaving contrails...looks like it is inching along when in reality it is travelling at 400+...

That's a good idea 240zste. Maybe FSX will increment speed in .1 or say .2 steps.Although I don't think so as it could be too late in the game to implement such a thing. Who knows though. A member of the FSX team may read this and say what a good idea and get the ball rolling.JimCYWG
