OK, that explains it pretty good.  What you are seeing in the "Select Aircraft" page is just a .JPG picture called a thumbnail that is in the texture folder of that aircraft.  What gets displayed, like in my screenshot, is how the aircraft will appear when you start the flight.

What software is your dad planning to reinstall?  Keep in mind that if his FSX installation does not have Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed, the aircraft will not show properly.
