GPU Advice needed

Featured Replies

Well, my GPU has died. I did some research, and the best match for my CPU would be 1060/1070/1070ti. Now, i'd like some opinions and if you can, please post your P3Dv4 Settings, CPU and GPU, and what usagge(CPU and GPU)you have with P3Dv4.

I'm saving for a new PC, so i'd like to buy a cheap GPU to use it until then, but it must be enough for Maddog. I was thinking about MSI 1050ti Gaming X, but i'm not sure if this one is good enough. Please advice. i'm really interested if someone is using this GPU with Maddog without problems. I couldn't use Maddog with my 560ti and 8GB Ram(i'll upgrade to 16GB RAM too).

I have 2700K @4.8Ghz(i can go for 4.9 without problems, even for 5.0 if needed), windows 7/64bit, some  G.SKILL ares DDR3 1600MHZ with great timings(CL8). I had an 560ti(MSI 560 ti twin frozr 2GB ), but that GPU just died(my faulth). I'm using native 1920/1080 monitor, so even 1080/1080ti would not be a bottleneck, and i could use it for a new PC later. But i'd like to buy 1050ti only if i'm sure it can run maddog without problems, this way i could get a new PC sooner. Becouse i'm going to buy the best CPU/GPU available at that time. Now, it would be 8700K and Titan X.

I've build my system 6 years ago, and this components where the best at that time, except GPU, but it was more then enough for FSX.

So, to be clear, i'd like to buy msi 1050 ti gaming x if that would be enough to use Maddog X. So, msi 1050 ti gaming x or msi 1060 6gb gaming x, or msi 1070 ti gaming(the difference between 1070 and 1070ti is only 40euros, so i'm not considering 1070 anymore).

I'm waiting for opinions

Unfortunately you picked a really bad time to buy or need a new GPU due the bitcoin miners and nVidia/AMD's lack of meaningful attempts to prevent sales to miners (would be relatively easy for nVidia to control GPU operations based on the very specific algorithms bitcoin mining uses) ... IMHO bitcoin mining is a Pyramid Scheme since it has no intrinsic value and speculative.  Pyramid Schemes are illegal in many countries including the US ... however, this topic is best kept for another day/thread.

Specific to your question, I'm not aware of the Maddog "itself" being that GPU intensive, most aircraft have a heavier reliance on the CPU and threading.  The TrueGlass usage in the Maddog when flying in rain/snow might add some GPU overhead but that'll only be during rain/snow.

Things that load up your GPU:

Dynamic Lights

Dynamic Reflections

Shadows (Terrain and SimObject) and Shadow quality

Water = Ultra or High

AA (especially SSAA)

Resolution (in your case 1920 x 1080 is easier on the GPU)

High Resolution textures (and/or usage of TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=9 or 10)

I'd recommend the 1060 at this point in time as it has 6GB VRAM (it's pretty easy to push P3D V4 beyond 4GB VRAM) and it performs about 40% faster than the 1050Ti.  Hopefully the 1060 will hold you over until the next "new" batch of GPUs is released and hopefully not bought before the bitcoin miners get to them all.

Cheers, Rob.

Yes, really bad time to need a new GPU, but i can't use my old GPU anymore, and it was a weak GPU anyway for P3Dv4 - 560ti with 2GB VRAM.

Maddog is probably ok now, i didn't have a chance to test current version. In the first version, there was no option to disable TrueLight, my GPU was at 100% all the time, and i had over 7GB RAM usagge(i have only 8GB), so it was pretty much unflyable due to low FPS.

Thank you for advice, i'm going for 1060 and 16GB RAM, can't wait to see how P3D looks with higher settings
