June 22, 200619 yr How to create realistic overcast layer of 1500-3000' height in FS9? I have ASv6 installed if it matters. I never get thick cloud layers even close to that height when flying and also when ASv6 feeds realistic weather.Anything that I need to set in FS9, ASv6 or FSUIPC? Could you please share your info, tips and tweaks for it?Thanks.
June 22, 200619 yr Are you using the Templates in the Wx Config, there is a 'Low Overcast one. In my case I write my own METARS and it generates pretty close to whats listed. This one will give you a low ceiling and heavy T storms. Use it to start and you can change it to suit what you want.KSTL 111551Z 20020G32KT 3SM +RATS BKN020 OVC120 19/17 A2981 RMK AO2 RAB21 SLP089 P0002 T01890172 TSSEIts for St Louis, ceiling 2000
June 22, 200619 yr Hi Dirk,In FS04:3D clouds 100%Cloud coverage MaximumLock your Frame Rate to 20-25 depending on your system. All other FS04 weather settings Off.In ASv6:Overcast Enhancement OffCumulus vs Stratus OffForce Lowest Ceiling OffIf you limiting cloud layers make sure it is 3 or more.Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.com/Active Sky V6 Development Team Active Sky V6 Proud SupporterHiFi Beta TeamRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/AirSource Member: http://www.air-source.us/FSEconomy Member:http://dot.kelder.net:8080/fseconomy/
June 22, 200619 yr "3D clouds 100%Cloud coverage MaximumLock your Frame Rate to 20-25 depending on your system. All other FS04 weather settings Off."Even with 3D clouds at 100 pct and cloud coverage maxed, "overcast" in FS2004 still leaves gaps thru which you can see the deck. It's one issue in FS2004 that the patch ignored and probably couldn't have been helped given the way the new clouds are created. I made an add-on which can simulate overcast and it's deep in the file library here, but it mucks up haze when viewed from above, so I don't suggest it unless someone is a diehard. For ILS practice, FS2002 is about the only game in town...or you have to stretch your imagination a bit and pretend the deck is really solid in FS2004. :)-John
June 22, 200619 yr Author Thank you, guys. Basically there is no overcast in FS9 then, nothing new.I have all those settings from my past notes from the forums. On the other hand I don't know if realistic overcast possible yet on the current hardware.

June 22, 200619 yr I use FS to create training videos and with Active Sky and Flight Environment I get exactly what I need for weather, including solid overcasts at any level. It's going to cost you a few bucks, but if you want realisitc weather, I know of no other way.
June 22, 200619 yr Please, share a picture. I'd like to see an example of a solid layer without having to place several overlapping cloud decks or tweak visibility in order to make a layer seem solid. When I talk about overcast, I am talking about being above the deck in clear skies and seeing nothing but a solid, seamless deck as far as the eye can see--including in close proximity to the aircraft. -John

In my case, for example, I need it for VATSIM or just current weather when flying with RC. If so, can you please share your secret formula, since I've got all of the components. :)

As I understand AS, and I am pretty new to it, there are options for that, and usually someone from As will reply to these threads.

I use overcast in conjunction with other weather, usually T storms, so there are not only a couple of layers of clouds, but also building 'Q's. I will try to set it up as you describe when I get a minute and see what it looks like.
June 22, 200619 yr This will probably get this thread locked or removed, but forget everything I just posted. With this coming, it may be a whole new ballgame!http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_post...?TID=17361&PN=1

June 22, 200619 yr That doesn't show well the issue seen with FS2004 overcast, given the POV in relation to the deck. Try a shot at night over a brightly lit city such as LA--unless you're pouring on the cloud layers, the lights will bleed through--at least they do in default MSFS.-JohnEdit: I should say the POV is somewhat shallow in relation to the deck...I can get the same effect in FS2004, but not complete coverage. One more edit--attached is the effect I achieved with my overcast add-on, and what I would hope one could do without one....http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/151591.jpg
