How to stop two AI aircraft meeting head-on on taxiway?

Featured Replies

I have on numerous occasions watched as two AI aircraft meet head-on, each going in opposite directions on the same taxiway. This usually happens where there is an entrance to the runway about halfway down the length of the runway which both incoming and outgoing aircraft are obliged to use. The two aircraft then face each other off until eventually one of them disappears. Is it possible to construct a system of one-way taxiways to avoid this, or is there any other way of overcoming the problem.ThanksMartin

Here is one I ran into yesterday.Landing @ Klawock (PAKW)on Prince of Wales Island using Misty Fjords and Tongass Fjords, two GA ac were at the holding point before entering the runway. I rolled past the taxiway apron and then wanting to go to the parking area, these two GA are blocking the apron, which is the only one to access and exit the runway, and the lead plane won't move onto the runway until I'm off, even though I am at the far end of the active and past the hold point. So I must taxi off the tarmac and go around these two which allows the 1st plane in lne to taxi onto the runway. I didn't have running the program called "SimpleAI" so I don't know if that would have helped or not.I'm not familiar with what actually takes place in the real-life in a situation as this. Maybe someone can help.Jim

Hi Martin, You ask:"Is it possible to construct a system of one-way taxiways to avoid this, or is there any other way of overcoming the problem."Yes. Use AFCAD2. You can even "build" a new taxiway if that is necessary. R-

Is it possible to construct a system of one-way taxiways to avoid this,Yes and no. We cannot do one way taxiways - but you can create additional invisible or visible taxiways with AFCAD.It won't be completely realistic - but there are a lot of local airport behaviors which are not cannot be repeated in FS.The normal procedure would be after the landing aircraft rolls past the taxiway - the departure aircraft, sometimes two or three, move down to the departure end - leaving the taxiway clear for the arriving aircraft. You can simulate that to some extent by placing an apron link from the connecting link between the hold short point and the runway link line all the way down and parallel to the runway to the turnaround area at the runway end. You will need a hold short node down at the runway end.At some airports this might have aircraft taxi on the runway while an aircraft is landing - since logically FS does not see them as the same piece of asphalt. So you will have to play with the airport to see what is acceptable. At many airports with this "T" configuraiton - it's just better to add a parallel taxiway. Not realistic - but sometimes your only choice is realistic with problems, and working.

Thank you all for your replies. I guessed there wouldn't be an easy answer to this. I will give Reggie's suggestion a go at my favourite airport. As we increasingly say these days, let's hope FSX will fix this ...Martin
