August 24, 200619 yr Hi Gang,I posted this in here as I know Ken is sometimes very busy, how does FS Autostart de-frag the RAM, and, is there any other way of doing this, or can it only be used / def-ragged by using FS Autostart. Thanks for any information.
August 24, 200619 yr A copy of my post to the other FSAutoStart thread:"I always run FsAutoStart three times in a row. Later passes run faster, no new programs are killed but the degfrag algorithm gets better and better. I gain almost 100K in free memory just from running it 2 extra times. After 3 there is no added benefit worth the time."It is a mystery to me, but there you go.
August 25, 200619 yr Didn't know that. I guess that's kind of like WinXP's default disk defragging...after 3 passes, the disk is more completely defragged. But if only 1 defrag is done, you'll still have some fragmentation.Rhett Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
August 25, 200619 yr Hi Guy's,thanks for the replies, cowlflaps, yes, I too have noticed that there is a significant improvement in running FS AS a couple of times.what I was getting at is, it would be great to have a stand alone option that lets you de-frag the RAM without starting anything, then you could run it a couple of times before actually having to start FS itself. rather than running FS AS, then closing Flight Sim, then running FS AS again etc.Rhett, yes, that has also been noticed regarding de-fragging the HDD, but, did you know that MS's de-frag is actually a cut down version made under licence, and for the specific use of MS by Executive Software International, Inc, who of course make the full blown version called Diskeeper Professional, Its currently version 9.thanks again guy's.
August 25, 200619 yr Duh, I answered my own question without realising it, tsk tsk.I just created another profile, set it to NO action on everything to avoid stopping and re-starting everything, and made sure that the command line where FS should be was Empty, this way I can run FS AS a couple of times, then just run it the final time under the proper profile and start up FS9 as usual.I did notice that the first run had a starting point of 777.65, the second one cami in at 816.15, the las one came in at 869.75, so it does make a difference in running it a few times, then running it under the real profile and getting the most out of it.Thanks again both,
August 25, 200619 yr yep, that is how i run it. Stand alone before i start FS etc. I'm not sure many folks realize the huge gain you get by running it a couple of times in row. so i thought i'd share that tip. If ken reads this (I think in fact he is a moderator) this is also a good time for me to send him a heartfelt public thanks for this contribution to our hobby and also for FS Configurator. thanks!

I may buy one of them once I switch over to Vista. Not sure yet.Rhett Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB

August 26, 200619 yr Hi Guy's,I would like to piggy back on to Cowlflaps comment too, I too think this is a fantastic piece of software developed by ken, and runs fantastically along side FS Configurator too.I wonder just how many other people are not getting this benefit purely because they did not know about it, or did not know the programs even existed.all too often people pass up on something just because they don't know what it is, or what it does.I may well write an independent guide / review on this and have it hosted by a friend of mine, just so that people can be made more aware of it, and it's massive gains, not just in FS, but any other memory hungry applications.I don't wish to cause any offence to Ken, but sometimes something written / explained by someone else that has no knowledge of the actual internal workings of the programme, and did not write the actual program can put something across in a different way, and this can sometimes mean that people understand the item in question more readily.a perfect example would be, remember when VCR's first hit the market, you needed a college degree just to tune in the VCR and TV together, and that was before you even dared to try and record something, only to find out it recorded something completely different !Thanks again Guy's.
