I think I found thermals

Featured Replies

I was flying around the north side of the little island that COCO ison in the ultralight with a fair weather theme at about 2500' when allof a sudden it got real bumpy and my altitude started increasing fairlyrapidly. I don't know if it was a thermal or not but that is what I would call it.Perhaps it was the warm shallow water.I also have seen a number of small power boats on the west side of theisland that TKPK is on. I saw something that I thought was some sortof sea creature but it was just a 'shadow only' part of a boat of some kind.theres lots of neat stuff in this thing. I'm very glad swampy areas where added.oh yeah: in the CRJ - I get almost zero engine sound in the virtual cockpituntil I look slightly to one side and then the engines get loud quicklyas I look in their direction. Is it possible to have more balanced sound?

There's always a sunset happening somewhere in the world that somebody is enjoying.

Tdragger somewhere mentioned that FSX will feature thermal modeling. Not sure if this means slope-winds or actual hot rising air, but in either case FSX is going to open up a whole new world to those who like to soar around a bit. I've been a fan of Condor for quite a while, but now it seems that FSX could be a real contender. I really hope that the thermal modeling is any good, since soaring is just about the coolest thing since sliced bread. One thing i already noticed about the standard glider that comes with FSX is that it's wings flex in a rediculous way.. i mean it's all nice and well to have a new feature in FSX (flexing wings), but i think it would be nice if it would be applied realistically.

I, too, thought the flex on the sailplane was a bit much, until I watched a video (real world) of a similar sailplane whose wings actually do flex nearly as much as what I've seen in FSX videos.

You can confirm whether it was a thermal by turning on a visualization in the Settings | Weather dialog. Try "Schematic" and you should see a faint spiral object wherever there are thermals. (Unless, of course, I forgot to include the texture file in the demo, in which case I apologize for the oversight. :-| )

It's not a faint spiral but a pitch black one (not always showing), I suspect you forgot the texture allright ;oPInterestingly, the "natural" display of thermals occasionally shows small patches typical of missing textures from a distance that dissappear when in proximity to the thermals. I assume those are missing textures for birds (eagles?) flying in the thermals.Very nice.--M

Yeah, bird or clouds or something. I forget what they decided on. Anyway, glad you can see the thermals.

How are the thermals modelled?Do you get updrafts from mountains? If so then SABA looks like it could be fun! :)

I tried to find updrafts near the mountains in the ultralight, but couldn't find any noticable effect in moderate winds..
