Why 'just' shader model 2.0

Featured Replies

My main GFX card at the moment is the ATI X800XL so the decision to only support Shader Model 2.0 is a good one for me but why isn't there Shader Model 3.0 support for the newer beter cards? Will FS-X bypas Shader Model 3.0 completly and go for DX 10 hardware directly? Is there no benefit for flightsimulators in the features of Shader Model 3.0?

> I'm guessing that the Shader 3.0 effects didn't look that much better in comparisonHmm the Crysis screenshots were in SM 3:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/154089.jpg

>I'm guessing that the Shader 3.0 effects didn't look that much>better in comparison, and tdragger has already posted>something to the effect of "most people have shader 2.0>cards".As opposed to people that have DX10 hardware???For the near term there is a lot more interest in SM3 support. So I wonder if there are things in SM3 that work in small First Person Shooter enviroments that don't work in the larger FS world.

In general it's better to use the lowest SM for the effect you're after since it's easier for the GPU to optimize. There's very little we've done in FSX where SM3 would show a noticable difference over SM2.

Crysis is also a DX10 game. All the videos and shots we've seen so far are in DX10 mode. They're brute forcing DX9 video cards to run DX10, which is why the gameplay videos look so jerkey.

Would you like to quote a source that proves me wrong? I was watching an interview with the Crytek developers and that's what they said they were doing.

Everything they showed at E3 is DX9...they may have released a DX10 tech demo in the past though. Dont have the time right now to find quotes..If they were emulating DX10 through DX9 playable realtime, you wouldnt see a choppy video, but a slideshow...

>Would you like to quote a source that proves me wrong? I was>watching an interview with the Crytek developers and that's>what they said they were doing."Since DirectX 10 cards didn't exist in May, the Crysis demo at the Electronic Entertainment Expo was actually running on DirectX 9 video cards, which is a good indication of what sorts of visuals you'll get with current hardware. "The E3 demo was all about DX 9 shader model 2.0--there was no more technology than this," Yerli [Cevat Yerli, Crytek president and CEO] said. He also addressed some of the controversy around the E3 demo. While visually amazing, the frame rate struggled quite a bit throughout the demo. However, he noted that Crysis was running on dual graphics-processor-unit systems, while most other PC games at the show were running on quad GPU systems. Still, we can expect performance on DirectX 9 cards to be smoother once the game is finished and optimized."source: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/crysis/n...views&page=2&q=DirectX 9 can still look absolutly amazing if used to its full potential.

However, I believe that may have been a DX9 version of it.Who knows, as a flagship next gen game, maybe someone has slipped them prototype DX10 hardware :(

I stand corrected then. I was mistaken.

>I stand corrected then. I was mistaken.Just imagine what it will look like with DX10 :(

Yeah I remember watching a video where they looked at a waterfall and there was a little faint rainbow in the mist and a just about fell off my chair. Why don't we have rainbows in FSX!? ;)
