Widescreen FSX

The highend market for CRT's and TFT's is far smaller than you seem to think.

Back when I bought my LG it was a little bit less expensive than an entry level "Pro" Eizo and a very good LCD. Still is - even though it's 25ms it's what I use for all my gaming (from Flight Simulator to Battlefield 2) and I can't say I'm suffering because of it. Not to mention the fact that I'm a graphics designer and have the same screen (although the non-pivotable B variant) at work ;) I can safely say that the L2010P's been a good display for all my needs, professional and otherwise, and wouldn't think twice about buying the newer, 16ms version for 650 euros (once again, slightly cheaper than an entry level "Pro" Eizo at 680 or so euros). The old one uses a Super-IPS panel and I believe the new one does too; personally I'm sold on S-IPS' performance.Of course there are better TFTs out there, but the point I'm going for here is that the price level where you can get a TFT with good color reproduction is around 700 euros at this time (for 20", anyway).

>I may be missing something here but FS9 already supports>widescreen. It can run at any resolution and aspect ratio>that your windows desktop can be set to.Yeah, it does support widescreen, but on a typical set-up (such as my 1680x1050 resolution) it zooms the picture and crops the top and bottom. Therefore, you aren't actually seeing anything more out the side, and you loose visual information at the top and bottom.Hopefully FSX will actually provide an enhanced peripheral field of view on a single widescreen monitor.

I'm not sure what you were expecting? :)When you take a 4:3 screen and change it to widescreen format, you either:1) crop stuff out from the top and bottom2) add new stuff to the edgesFS9 does option number 1, because each aircraft has a default zoom level for its VC. FS9 obeys this zoom level, keeping the gauges comparatively the "same size" in all resolutions. The added benefit of larger resolutions is added clarity and definition, assuming the gauges have been designed with high-resolution displays in mind, but aside from that changing resolution (even if you're widening it) changes nothing in the VC. You don't see more with larger resolutions. If you want to take advantage of the "additional space" a widescreen monitor offers you need to zoom out your view, so that you reclaim the top and bottom portions of what you had in 4:3 format. That's the only way. Now, after zooming out a bit to see the same area vertically as you used to before, you might be thinking "Wait, aren't the gauges now smaller than what I had with my old 4:3 monitor?". That could very well be the case and the only solution to THAT problem is to buy a bigger widescreen monitor. A larger resolution won't help you here, such as going from 1600x1200 to 1920x1200: you really need a physically larger screen. You have to remember that a 20" 4:3 monitor gives you more vertical space than a 20" 16:10 (or 16:9) monitor. To match the vertical space of a 20" 4:3 monitor, you need a 23" 16:10 monitor.I hope this helps clear the issue for you! FS9 can already do for you what you want; you don't have to wait for FSX to benefit from your widescreen monitor. You just have to play with the zoom level.

>> FS9 can already do for you what you want; you don't have to wait >> for FSX to benefit from your widescreen monitor. You just have to >> play with the zoom level.Just to add to that - After you've zoomed out to get more field of view: if your VC is too far away and too small you can move your eyepont forward with CTRL-Backspace. (CTRL-Enter moves it back again). This brings you closer to the VC again and may help restore the guages to a readable size. Moving the eyepoiont doesn't alter the field of view angle.Paul
