Fun with TUIfly - Follow the "Smile"!

Featured Replies

[Note: This post is triggered by my (long-time and somewhat familiar) interest in this airline re-kindled by a "Yellow" (PMDG 737) TUIfly repaint recently posted, here, by Steve D. However, I'm not using that repaint here. But, who knows, a year from today, some of us maybe flying our (favorite) PMDG planes over that beautiful (and worldwide) MFS scenery...(TBD)!]

Anyway, now, back to TUIfly: With its dramatic (and numerous) livery colors, TUIfly is quite remarkable! I was always aware of the striking "yellow" and "blue", but, as I looked more, I was fascinated by the impressive (and diverse) range of its color-patterns. But, first, a bit about this interesting airline...e.g. TUIfly Deutschland, formerly TUIfly, is a German leisure airline headquartered at Hannover Airport, with bases at (ten or so) other German airports - formed in 2007 by the merger of Hapag Lloyd Flug (Hapagfly) and Hapag-Lloyd Express (HLX). You may have seen HLX's famous "New York Taxi" style (checkered) yellow-cab livery with the (equally famous and highly successful) slogan "Fly for the price of a taxi"! I've included one image of HLX (please see Part II post). Look for the "Smile" logo, there, (next to the door), on that livery.

This airline is part of the parent (and the world-leading) TUI tourism Group, which has TUI flight operations in Sweden (TUIfly Nordic), U.K. (TUI Airways - formerly Thomson Airways), TUI Airlines (Belgium), and TUI Airlines (Netherlands) - that would explain the proliferation of diverse colors that we find for TUIfly - surely, a joy to TUIfly lovers (and repainters alike)! So, in this account, in the separate post (Part II), I've displayed a set of 15 TUIfly images...with the characteristic (and ever-present) "Smiling Face" on the fuselages, but sometimes that's not easy to spot (or absent). And, if you're wondering about the two base colors "Yellow" and "Blue", in December 2013, TUIfly transformed from "Yellow" to "Blue", (officially) abandoning their distinctive yellow livery, and replacing it by the new blue design already introduced by its sister airlines in Netherlands, Belgium, and United Kingdom (see the two the basic Yellow/Blue liveries - cast in the twilight glow - the last two images in the set in Part II).

So, this account, here, has 2 parts. Part I (this post) illustrates a flight (with PMDG 737NG-800WL) in the (sweet) livery of my personal preference (Gummy Bears) HARIBO GOLDBAREN (I'd seen it last week, in the local grocery ($1.99 per 8oz package) ...🙂...!!). The illustrated flight, here, is from Stuttgart (EDDS) to Munich (EDDM) in (Orbx's) Germany South - with a bit of (scenic) diversion towards (and over) the majestic German Alps along Germany's southern border with Austria. Also, for a bit of fun (and as a reminder of TUIfly's origin), I've included images of the (classic) Hapag Lloyd Flug livery for parts of the flight. So, in the (below) image set, here, do notice (and excuse!) the transition between the 2 liveries. After the initial shots are taken with the GOLDBAREN (to takeoff and climb, till GEARs/FLAPs retracted and LNAV/VNAV enabled), then the rest of the shots (all the way to touchdown at EDDM) are with the Hapag Lloyd. Hope you enjoy these pictures. And, Good (rest) of the weekend!
