Want to pack a bit more of a punch!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

So recently I upgraded my RAM to a slightly faster speed up to 3200MHz using Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO DDR4 C16 (2x8GB). After realising that my MBO BIOS was on a very old version, I have now updated this.

However, I really haven’t felt or seen any difference in FPS purely from changing this which I was slightly hoping for.

My system is now as follows:

  • Intel Core i7-6700k Skylake @ 4.2GHz
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 8GB
  • Corsair Hydro H80i V2 CPU Cooler
  • Asus Z170 Pro Gaming MBO
  • Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO DDR4 3200MHz C16 (2x 8GB)
  • 512GB Samsung SM961 M.2 PCIe SSD (Windows 10 OS)
  • 1TB Samsung 850 EVO SSD (P3D and other Applications/Games/Utilities that I play/use)
  • 4TB SSHD Hybrid Drive (My main harddrive for all my documents, photos, everything! Backed up through BackBlaze)
  • EVGA GQ 80 Plus Gold 850W Modular PSU
  • NEC EA241WM Monitor x2
  •
  • Is there anything that anyone would recommend to change (apart from the monitors, they are huge and heavy!) that could give me a bit more FPS? My system isn’t awful I just feel at stages at busy airports with nice add-one I’d like to see a bit more than just 10-15FPS.

Many thanks,

Tristan

After just a quick look around, I think I need to focus on upgrading my MBO and Processor. As I’m fairly new to actually upgrading new bits in a current desktop system, I’d like to make sure whatever MBO I upgrade to, the CPU will also fit too.

Any and all advice appreciated.

EDIT: I’ve just found an exact post that I’ve done previously asking the same question before I upgraded my memory so moderators feel free to delete this thread. Apologies

Gotta give you credit for searching.  "New PC builds" posts are like a dime a dozen around here.

What did you settle on?

I probably need to have a look at upgrading my MBO and CPU.. And also monitors too as I would eventually like to go 4k at somepoint. Still need to properly read the thread I found though.

Having got a reasonably balanced system there, the most obvious option is to overclock the cpu. You can probably achieve a 4.6 overclock by just increasing the multiplier and leaving the voltages on auto, without causing extreme heating issues. I think on that Asus board it even offers a built in facility to achieve a useful overclock. I run the same processor at 4.6 on all cores without any problems using air cooling with a Noctua NH14S.
