FSX Experience

Featured Replies

I've read the posts deriding aspects and exalting the merits of FSX. Seems a bit early to burn the witch at the stake as it were. A program of this complexity will surely take some time to absorb and allow us to determine if we truly like or hate it. Following are some of my observations having flown FSX since Oct. 4.The first couple of days, I was appalled at the frame rates. After some in depth tweaking, however, I was able to get the sim flyable, except as others have stated, around high def cities and airports. I also had to reinstall once (BSD) and repair five times. For some reason it took a bit for it to stabilize. All seems ok now.I was impressed with some of the visuals. The sky, water, and some of the landclass areas are simply astounding compared to other versions of flight simulator. This is one of the reasons I purchased the package at the earliest opportunity. The aircraft are another story. We are left without a mid-range aircraft. If you need to fly a route above 3k miles, you are relegated to the 747. Seems overkill for a coast to coast cross country. Also, it seems to me that if MS/ACES intent was to lead us into 3d vc's they would have taken the time to make sure all the buttons and switches worked. I base this on the fact that the 2D cockpits are almost useless for flying considering you can't see over them.In VC mode:In the 747, the autopilot master switch doesn't work. In the 172, the light switches don't work. In most of the aircraft, the hotspots are very small and move in rough air, climbing, or descending, making it very hard to make changes. Some of the switches replace the mouse pointer with the hand, but don't have tooltips, or move when clicked. Don't know what they do. Setting takeoff pitch in the airliners is almost hopeless. The pitch keeps changing on its own. You have to almost continuously apply elevator pitch up until you can engage the autopilot and altitude hold. There is plenty more to be found, but as I said it will take time to break these new shoes in. Looking for many hours of joy and frustration.

Thank you.

Rick
