Current best practices for purchase and install?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have been out of town for the past couple weeks, and now that I'm home, I want to get the new sim installed.

  • What are the current best practices for purchasing? Is one store better than the other? Are there any impacts on our ability to get add ons? I'm leaning in the MS direction, because I'll probably get an Xbox at some point, but that isn't a priority. I don't have a lot of games, so having everything on Steam isn't an issue.
  • I have seen a number of reports of installation issues. Is there some thing I should do to prepare for installation, or something I can do to avoid issues?

Thanks.

Bump

Any input or is the best advice to just buy it at the MS store, install where the installer wants it and hope for the best?

Not personally had any problems with getting it from MS. Some people like the idea of having it with all their other stuff on Steam. I do have lots on Steam, but I figured it'd be better to go direct to the source for a flight sim which is likely to be updated frequently.

Easiest solution if you are undecided on which, is to get the Gamepass version (standard) for a quid (when you sign up), check that out. If you are happy with it, buy the full-on version from the store to escape the continuing subscription (4 quid a month). If not, go with Steam.

Thanks. I'm actually not on the fence, so i'll go straight for the premium deluxe. MS Store it is. I only have a few other games, but I wasn't sure if there were any technical differences that may pop up later.

The way I figured it was that with something that could well end up being a resource hog and require updates, one less thing to rely on and have running in the chain (Steam) was an unnecessary extra thing and another hoop to jump through which you would not have by going with MS.

Turned out the Steam version has (or had) issues with people buying the Premium Deluxe version and only getting the standard version on their download, so I guess my suspicions that it might cause issues were at least correct in that case. Thus I'm glad I went with the MS store.

Thanks. I'll go with MS Store. I haven't owned a console since I bought a PS3, but I now have a 3yo son, and I can see him getting into video games in the near future. Having the new sim on an Xbox may be a good way to introduce him to FS. It is really a great hobby for kids once they reach the right age. It covers so many STEM subject areas and other areas like geography, travel, and of course, aviation. Another benefit is my wife would be outnumbered on the decision to build a full motion sim in the spare bedroom😄 Gotta start laying the groundwork now.

I did read in the tips that it is important to have the MS store and Windows fully updated, so I am doing that first. I'm also going to update to the newest Nvidia driver. I included multiple restarts just to make sure I catch all of the updates prior to install.

I'm going to go with the default installation path. P3DV4 is on a dedicated NVME. I have a lot of space on my C drive (same type of drive), so that seems like a good spot. If/when I get to the point of replacing P3D, I'll wipe the dedicated P3D drive and reinstall FS there.
