August 29, 20205 yr Last night I, for the first time, carried my tower, key, mouse and yoke across the house to use my 55" OLED TV as monitor (my monitor is a simple 27" Dell 1080p monitor). Let's say that I really, really liked the experience (both for the 4K, even with a scale rendering of 70, and the real estate). As everyone knows, large computer monitors are way more expensive than similar-sized TV. I understand why a FPS gamer would be ready to invest a lot of money in order to get super super refresh rates and response times, but for flight simming... Yet before I more seriously shop around for a 50" 4K budget TV (e.g. TCL and Hisense), I want to know whether I'm missing something fundamental here. Thanks!
August 29, 20205 yr Moderator @Turpentine, you have to be careful in your choice of TV. For sharp Windows text (use Explorer) the TV has to be capable of supporting chroma 4:4:4. It's doubtful a budget OLED TV would do that and as a result, standard Windows tasks would be hard on the eyes. The other consideration is burn-in on an OLED. They are more suceptible to it than standard LCD displays. Sure, the size make it an impressive experience but you need to take those factors into consideration. Ray (Cheshire, England). August 29, 20205 yr Author Thanks! I knew about burn-in, which is why I was thinking of going with a budget LED instead of OLED (at the cost of sacrificing great contrast). I didn't know about chroma 4:4:4 and Windows text, though to be honest I had forgotten to turn on that feature on my TV last night and it still looked great. I probably should just eventually buy a budget TV, bring it home, see how it looks and return if I don't like!
