I think this is new since last patch, or at least I never noticed.  But a lot of my airfields on the world map now have a little "tool" icon bottom left.  I've noticed in the Filter option "third party content" - if I untick this the icon on the associated airfield disappears.  Ok great!  However it seems this icon is tagged against airports I haven't downloaded 3rd party content for??

The little icon you refer to means it is a "hand crafted" airport, either via 3rd party (Community folder or Marketplace), or via MS/Asobo (World Updates plus what came with the initial release).
