October 26, 20205 yr Nepal - West Our tour of western Nepal begins at Simikot (9751 ft) high above the Karnali river and ends at Bharatpur (679 ft) on the Gandaki river. In between we will follow the deep river valleys, cross numerous high ridges, and land at six remote airstrips (some perched precariously on high ridges). The route proceeds east with stops at Bajura (VNBR), Jumla (VNJL), and Dolpa (VNDP). Then the route crosses the very high ridge (between Marpha and Tukuche) that extends from Dhaulagiri. This is followed by a very steep descent to reach Jomson (VNJS) at the bottom of the Kali Gandiki gorge. Be careful during the descent to avoid overstressing your aircraft. The Kali Gandiki gorge separates the major peaks of Dhaulagiri (26,795 ft) on the west and Annapurna (26,545 ft) on the east. If one measures the depth of a canyon by the difference between the river height and the heights of the highest peaks on either side, the gorge is the world's deepest. From Jomson, the route proceeds north and then east to our highest airstrip Mandang (VNMA) at 11,093 ft. Following the Marsyangdi river valley out of the high mountains and into foothills of the Himylaya to the next stop at Gorkha (VNGK). The final destination is Bharatpur (VNBP). FlightPlan Here The route is 262 miles in length with seven landings. While the Caravan is suitable for the route, the climb performance of the TBM930 will make flying the route much easier. You will need to use reverse thrust to stop on the smaller airfields and takeoffs will be challenging, but fun. There are three recommended freeware enhanced airstrips: Simikot V1.1 Dolpa V1.0 Jomson V1.0 Recommend Departure time of 2:00PM local so that we can experience the afternoon light and shadows as we negotiate our way through this rugged terrain. October 28, 20205 yr Another Asobo bugfest. My sim has terrain issues. Three of the airports end up perched on the side of a mountain. And several others have steep mountains placed too close to the runways. It is hard to plan a safe approach. Surely these issues can be fixed ... 😎 --Mike MacKuen
