Got rid of the desert

Featured Replies

Ok I am sure someone else has already figured this out but I never came accross it through my daily reading of this forum so here goes-I HATED the desert landscape that was Japan (or anywhere else for that matter) in FSX. I decided to change seasons since right now it auto sets to the fall and WALLAH!The bugged textures are the Autumn textures. I moved them over to summer or spring and I get all my lush green vegetation back!FSX Aces or whoever screwed the pooch when it came to this little bug that got out from under there noses.now back to figure out WHY I am getting bugged runways with Simmer's Sky Japan

"The bugged textures are the Autumn textures. I moved them over to summer or spring and I get all my lush green vegetation back!"Appreciate that I can just change the season to summer or spring but can you let me know which are the textures to change over so that we can fly in Autumn in "real" time. Many thanksJohn Rooum

BumpJust done a re-install and would like to try this?John R

For what it's worth, it's possible to cure the problem with more detailed textures if you own Flight 1's Ground Environment.... OK, they may not be as hi-res as FSX default textures, but they are more detailed, eliminate the desert, and look to me to be more 'accurate' and have better blending! To install, if you've already got GE installed on your PC, in FS9, just open up the texture management software that allows you to determine which texture sets you want, and install to a 'dummy' FS9 folder that also contains a copy of the FS9.exe, and a blank, empty 'scenery/world/texture folder tree. Re-direct the GE installation path for the textures to your new 'dummy' FS9 and click on 'Install'. Once it's done, copy the contents of the scenery/world/texture folder to the same path in FSX, allowing the GE textures to over-write the defaults **NOTE - DO make a backup of this default texture folder first** just incase you want to revert back! You'll notice the 'improvement' almost immediately, though of course, at lower altitudes you'll see that the GE textures aren't as sharp as the defaults were, but above 2000ft it won't really matter; there are still some default textures showing - obviously FSX has a wider variety than FS9 had, but for the most part, the GE textures make FSX a more realistic world to fly around. I look forward to seeing an updated GE package in the future, but till then, I think the FS9 version will be fine for me! It does help a little on fps too, as these GE textures are a lot smaller than the FSX textures; even after using the resized modifications!

Bah! Unfortunately, there are too many areas that GE doesn't cover; I guess that FSX has a lot more textures than FS9! There are too many long, repeating strips of defaults showing through the GE textures, especially in the UK; it looks dreadful...especially when flying during Autumn...!!i'm back with the resized defaults now...oh well, it was worth trying!

I agree that the Western USA mentality of the person who selected the Fall textures really made a good season look very bad. For some it is not an issue but others find it more than just annoying. This is because they (as I) believed that the FSX ground textures were one of the central elements for the purchase. I have changed a few fall textures with the free paint program Gimp. I have never used one of these complex tools for this type of task so it is yet another learning curve that has nothing to do with enjoying my purchase. In fact it is boring and tedious. There will be a scheduled patch sometime next year. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft corrects this obvious visual flaw. Right now my lawn is green and will remain so until late August when rainfall, not Microsoft, will determine the color.Dick Boley 25 miles East of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
