New rig or only the GPU ?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am looking at improving FPS of my PC.

i7-5930K

32GB ram 3000 CL15

2x EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti CLASSIFIED GAMING ACX 2.0+ SLI.

Mainly using Aerowinx PSX and X-Plane 11.50+ (for visuals) and with this settings:

As you can see, I have a FPS of about 30...

Just bought MSFS 2020 and man...FPS took a beating...

I was thinking of upgrading the GPU only (for the moment)...do you think it could be "enough" to reach at least 60 FPS in Xplane ? Maybe with the details maxed out ?

I was thinking of a RTX3080 or maybe better wait for the AMD RX6900XT...

How about my actual CPU paired with one of those cards? It will be a bottleneck ?

Thanks for any suggestion.

AA

Have you turned Dev mode on in the sim? That will show you if your GPU or CPU limited or both... Seeing how the sim heavily relies on the CPU (atleast for now, DX12 an further optimisation may improve this) it might be worth looking at a CPU upgrade also.

Hello Carts85,

thank you very much for the help.

No..I haven't turned Dev mode on...and I don't know how to do that 😳.

I think your video card is a major factor...even at 1080P.  You've got a more powerful CPU than I do but I've got a 1080 Ti.  At 1080P resolution and high settings even big cities are 20-25 fps...and mostly smooth.

Have you considered going AMD?  They just came out with a new Ryzen CPU that appears to tie or beat Intel (single thread) for a lot less money.

edit: Surprise - it's out of stock ha: https://www.amd.com/en/direct-buy/5450881700/us

No worries.

Under general settings - developers (at the bottom). Turn on an go fly somewhere that will stress test it a little.

Hi Ryan,

definitely looking for the upgrade...and specifically for the AMD Ryzen 5900X and relative parts.

Problem is that is quite difficult to find right now...

Forgot to add that the display I use right now is a NEC 30" 2560x1600 60Hz...

Would look for a GPU first, that in any case would suit me even when I will upgrade the whole PC..

Thanks

Hi Carts85,

Thanks, I will look into it and report back.

EDIT: Do you mean in the main settings before launching the game ?

I don't see that option:

EDIT 2:

In the game I see these options.. which one I should select?

I think even a new GPU would be helpful especially at that resolution.  Again, also hard to find.  A 3080 would be perfect

Yes, I think I will go for a GPU first... I might wait to see the reviews of AMD RT6900XT how it fare in comparison to the 3080 and even the 3090...for half his price..

In any case I don't believe that by end of November I will be able to buy anything...there is nothing in the stores around here...

That's definitely not my area of expertise....  in the past, versions of flightsim (XP/FSX etc) have not responded well to AMD cards.  I have no clue if that is not the case now.

I've always used Nvidia though (except back in the day when I had a Voodoo card LOL)

Same here...always Nvidia...

Fact is that on MSFS forum there's plenty of ppl complaining about poor FPS even with RTX3090....in the 20-30 fps range...

Might be worthy to wait and see how AMD cards fare in this regard.
