How do we find the ILS frequency?

Yup, I know the Manual describes how to obtain the ILS frequency for a destination airport in the Flight Plan.But I've spent literally hours trying and still can't figure out how to do it....Would some kind soul please spell the steps out in easy stages? In FS9 I had no difficulty in understanding and using the FMC...so surely the Garmin 500 can't beat me?Can you help please?Cliff

Bring up the map. click the destination airport. All the frequencies will be shown for all available nav and comms.Allcott

Bingo Allcott!May I ask if you can guide me to the final step?I've been trying to successfully complete the Mission "Rome to Naples"with an Autopilot ILS landing. This time, following your advice and using the ILS frequency found on the map, the aircraft lined up with the runway BUT didn't lose altitude to follow the glide path at it should have and instead stayed at the 3,000 ft altitude last instructed by ATC.I must therefore be doing something wrong and perhaps you can identify just what that is.My settings on approach were as follows:NAV selected AP onAutothrottle onAPR onFD onILS onNote: Before activating the ILS I first chose LOC...then APP.Cliff

3000 ft is too high.In FSX, you have to approach the glide slope from below.So 2500 ft might work in many cases, 2000 ft always does.And make sure you switch from LOC to APR before you cross the glide slope (in case of the A321 not too early, because the plane will dive to the ground then).

Due to the help you've both given I'm now one step further in my attempt to be comfortable with FSX"Rome to Naples" went off without a hitch and I'm off and running again.Many thanks guys!Cliff

You first need to choose an approach..Some airports don't have them, but of course they wouldn't have any ILS freq's either.. Lets say I fly to KLIT and needthe freq for ILS 04L. I click on "PROC" and then scroll to "select approach" and hit enter. I'll choose ILS 04L as an example.I'll usually choose vectors and hit enter to load. Then goback to the regular map. "FPL". To find the frequencies, hit the top right pointing arrow on the GPS. Then hit the bottom left button. You will then see a list of every frequencythey use at that airport. Other pages will show runway info, lighting, etc..I prefer to use the GPS, cuz I don't have to stop the simto look up a freq..MK

I'd been about these topics and wondering how to deal withcombining an ILS approach with being given vectors for a good approach.Thanks MKCliff

Are you running IFR? IE: flightplan.If so, ATC will give you approach vectors.If VFR, for me it just depends. It dependswhich direction I'm coming from, etc..If I'm going into a semi straight in runway, I'lluse the GPS approach vectors. But if I've got tomake a U turn to get back to the runway in use, I might modify a bit. If you use the GPS vectors, you might have to make too sharp a turn to go back to the runway. I'll often run the GPS vectors, but then change to a downwind direction when a little outfrom the airport. That way the turns to get back won't be spilling coffee all over the cockpit.. :(I'll then run a visual approach using the standardtraffic pattern. But I'm running IFR 98% of the time on any real flight I fly. I'm only VFR when I'm just goofing around. Tactics will vary I'm sure.. I'm not a realpilot either, so some of the things I do VFR may be frowned on in the real world at certain airports. MK

Hit the bottom left button (NRST)But that doesn't appear to give the ILS frequency.I chose, for example LIRE.That shows the Bearing as 091, the distance as 16.6 nm and the ILS as 7242 feet. Flight Sim - both 2004 and FSX - have two modes of approach.The default novice approach is "Vectors to final" which sets you up straight in about 10 miles out on an ILS approach. If no ILS approach is available, and the weather is VMC - you will be given a visual straight in approach.You can ask for any approach you want - for the active runways - which is in the FS database - if you are flying IFR or VFR.The key to being able to fly more realistic flight plans is to ask for an approach with a transition. Then you will be cleared direct to the IAF point/ transition for the approach.You can display each approach and transition on the default GPS - just zoom out if you need a wider view.The key change factor in FS is the VMC/IMC setting - which is basically whether or not the visibility if above or below three miles. In IMC - an IAP must be used for landing, and you must be on an IFR flight plan.Simply adding a localizer and a glidepath, either with AFCAD (FS2004) or XML code (FSX) does not add an instrument approach procedure. Those must also be coded and added.

If you have another computer handy while flying, or before you depart, you can go to www.airnav.com. You can type in the destination airport. Note: this is for USA based airports only.Once you get to the airport page, you can select the runway and if there is an ILS approach, you will see an ILS hyperlink. Click on that, it gives you ILS approach information Frequencies, true and magnetic bearings, etc.I use it a lot.Barry

But in order to see freq's, you must select an approach in the "proc" menu first. They won't show up just by selecting an airport alone. Only after you select an approach will they show. MK
