Aircraft Import Fixes

Featured Replies

I haven't seen a guide to importing FS9 aircraft into FSX so I thought I would start posting problems and solutions I find along the way. Perhaps you might do the same.No name for this fix you'll have to look at the pics. Taken after a basic copy/paste of the aircraft folder from FS9 to FSX[bold]2D[/bold][centre]http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/4379/2dqi9.jpg[/centre][bold]VC[/bold][centre]http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/38/vcpj1.jpg[/centre][bold]SPOT[/bold][centre]http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/893/spotmm0.jpg[/centre][bold]SOLUTION[/bold]I removed the following from the bottom of the panel.cfg file in the panel folder{Default View}X=0Y=0SIZE_X=8191SIZE_Y=3016No more problems, all looks as it shouldAbove is Kate's Lion by Lionheart Creations.Andrew Brown192029.png

What ever you removed from the panel.cfg, put back in.That sets the view horizon.Put the gauge files in the aircraft's panel directory. If gauges still don't show up then put then in the FSX gauges directory. The funny looking VC view is most likely due to another window set to show. Try pressing shift+1 and the other shift+numbers.

Try pressing shift+1 and the other>shift+numbers.I know what that section of the panel.cfg does.Just saying in my case it fixed the problem. One thing not shown above is when I did close the main panel (shift+1) I was left with the top half of the screen as sky the bottom half was black. I tried the panel from the C172 - that worked fine and if I shift+1 with that one no bottom half of screen as black. The only panel set to show was the main window. Obviously the section I deleted had a problem in FSX that was not a problem in FS9.The gauges had not yet been moved over because I wanted to see if the aircraft worked before adding gauges to FSX. If I had moved everything at the same time and the plane wouldn't load or FSX crashed I wouldn't have known the cause (plane, fx or gauges)! Now finished and looking as it should.Andrew Brown192029.png

Some notes based on what I did next to Kate's Lion.Copied over the gauge files I needed from FS9 into the Panel folder of my airplane, you can find out which ones they are and where to find them by reading the panel.cfg file in FS9. They could be added to the FSX gauge folder but I didn't know if any of them will work yet so better to start that way. You can move them to the Gauges folder later or leave them in the panel folder that's up to you. When I selected the aircraft I was working on I had a security warning asking if you to run this software ... name of gauge file" I clicked on Run. Next it will ask you if you want to Designate this module as Trusted Software I chose to click on NO until I had finished. In my panel there were two gauges named in panel.cfg asgauge00=Cessna208!VOR, 0,1,91,91gauge01=Cessna182s!VOR2, 93,0,90,90those gauge files don't exist in FSX so after looking at some of the default aircraft in FSX the ones in the C172 looked OK so I read the C172 panel.cfg to find the name of the gauges and replaced my two lines withgauge00=CessnaWAlpha!VOR1_Alpha, 0,1,91,91gauge01=CessnaWAlpha!VOR2_Alpha, 93,0,90,90When happy with my panel I checked the finished panel.cfg file. There were gauge files moved over from FS9 I didn't need any more for FSX, I deleted them. I've deleted the cessna182s.gau file in my case. If you aren't 100 percent sure what you are deleting and why leave them alone.Happy that the gauges I moved across are working with FSX and do not cause it to crash I clicked on YES to Designate this module as Trusted Software next time I was asked.I can mess around with the panel some more later but I think it is better to leave it alone for a while until I am compltetely happy that everything is working.Andrew Brown192029.png

The reason I started this thread was because all I have seen so far is "this plane can be moved across" "that plane cannot be moved across" but no explanation of how. I decided to try for the first time to move a plane over and it didn't go as smoothly as I would have liked. As I said perhaps if we share what we do maybe others will have a try. I could have said I moved plane X across, it works but I had to mess around with it for a while.Anyone here got anything to say that will help the next first timer?Andrew Brown192029.png

Thanks Andrew this is a needed thread many people have moved great planes to FSX then taunt us with their great photos but do not tell us how they did. Now they have to give it up.;)

The line that I found that caused the problem noted above was:render_3d_window=1Remove it or set it to 0 and the missized 3D window problem shown above will go away.I tried to list the extraordinary steps I took to move the planes I have moved over in this thread - http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...71804&mode=fullFor those planes without directions - Move the plane's aircraft directory from FS9aircraft over to the directory of choice in FSX, making sure the directory you moved it to is listed in the section of your fsx.cfg file such as:SimObjectPaths.6=SimObjectsaddon airplanesSimObjectPaths.7=AircraftMake sure to increment the number. I keep forgetting and then wonder why the planes there don't show up. The path starts at the root directory of FSX. The default is FSXSimObjectsAirplanes, but I like to choose from one of the two above as it keeps my addon data separate from the default data, and makes it easier to manipulate.Check all the various .cfg files (sound.cfg, panel.cfg, even model.cfg) to see if it is aliasing something. Freeware planes often alias things like the ..simobjectsairplanesdouglas_dc3sound directory (<-- updated path for FSX for aircraft installed to FSXaircraft) for the sounds.Check the panel.cfg file for any FS98 style gauges and replace them with FS2000 or later style gauges if you can. I like to use FS Panel Studio to do this. Anyone know of another way to determine if a gauge file is FS98 or not?Make sure all the gauges listed in the panel.cfg file exist either in the panel directory of the airplane, in the FSXgauges directory, or in whatever path they are called for in the panel.cfg file. For instance, PAD likes to put their panels and sound files in the FS9aircraftfsfsconv directory, and David Maltby puts them in the FS9aircraftDMFS Shared Files directory. I'd suggest moving the Lockeheed_Vega, Douglas_DC3, Spirit of St. Louis, C172, C182, and C208 gauge and cab files over from FS9 to FSXgauges before you even start. Some of these may be in the panel directories of their respective planes.Check the aircaft.cfg file and find all the effects files (search for fx) and make sure they are in the correct location (usually FSXeffects or FSXeffectsxxx where xxx is a subdirectory of the effects directory.Your best bet is to find the installation file for the plane and install it to a dummy directory (like C:wutempFS9) because, for instance, some planes will install files in the FS9texture directory, and these can be hard figure out which is which.Start FS and take an image (use the V key) of the airplane's exterior, and crop and reduce it to 256 x 128 pixels in size, name the file thumbnail.jpg and place the picture(s) in the appropriate texture directory. I hope somebody develops a tool to automate this process, I'm thinking of something like Library Object Viewer, which, you feed it the aircraft directory, and it is able to place the textures appropriately on the model, put a background image behind it, and save the file(s) to the correct texture directories.Sorry, I can't help you on updating aircraft.cfg and .air files to fix performance issues.Well, that's what I do. Kind of a tedious process, but, I have gottan a lot of my favorite planes to work in FSX.
