after every upgrade, within a few days hangs on black screen

Featured Replies

Love the game. Initially the first upgrade no problems. Since then every upgrade the game starts normally and then within half a week or so after it looks for updates, it goes to the black screen to load, instead of one minute it will try loading for 25 minutes or so and then hang about 80% loaded. I tried the repair button, no effect. I notice my Community Folder is completely empty. I did not change the install location, I just accepted the default location each time. I have had to reinstall the game completely four times.  Every time I reinstalled it the problem went away. But then with the every next upgrade the problem returns within a few days or so. This past world update for N. America within three days the problem returned. I reinstalled, the problem went away and then LOL there was another update on 12/8, a very small update as you know, and within three days the problem returned again. I guess I need to install it again, but I sure would love some insight into why this is happening. I always ensure all updates to Microsoft are completed. I have 16gigs RAM and 8 gigs video ram. I notice that when I am experiencing this problem it seems as if the game is not accessing my RAM. The use of RAM never goes above 4 gigs or so when starting the game unsuccessfully. This problem only happens within a few days of any upgrade. I've searched my whole computer for any other Community folder for MS flight but there is only one, located in the default location. I've checked the forums and my Community folder is right where they say it should be for a Microsoft install. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've searched the forums and haven't found anyone experiencing the same problem, that being the situation that occurs after every upgrade. What surprises is that it doesn't FUBAR it right away after the upgrade. It's always about 3-5 days that it goes sour.

One last detail. When it appeared that the game was not accessing my RAM, I opened other programs and immediately the RAM was being accessed by those programs. So it wasn't a download issue or anything like that. I have a 200 Mbps connection and have never had issues with it.

Just for clarification.....you have posted in the Microsoft Flight forum, which is from 2012 not the new MSFS2020 Sim.

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱

I moved this thread to the proper (MSFS 2020) forum.

The game couldn't load or run at all if it couldn't access RAM.

This looks like a file system permissions problem to me.  I'd check that the scenery cache file is not in a location where the permissions are set so that writes to it are being blocked by Windows.

If the default location is within any folder whose name starts with "Program Files" or a subfolder under a folder similarly named, that may be the source of your problem.

This is a bit confusing. Are the two posts above responses to my issue? If it is a permissions problem, then why would the game run for three days after an upgrade and then suddenly not load? It seems to me that if permissions are not set properly, then wouldn't that make it fail to load every time? I have not changed any permissions or settings. When I posted this original problem as listed above, I chose for it to be listed to the Flight Simulator 2020 forum. Based on the response above that I think is addressed to me, apparently it didn't post in the Flight Simulator 2020 forum and W6kd moved it there. Which I appreciate. As far as I know, the scenery cache file is wherever the program installed it. I didn't choose where it is and I have no idea where it is. When I install the game each time, I just accept the default location. And if an upgrade is not offered for a full month, then my simulator works perfectly. Then an upgrade, then three or four days later it won't load more than 80%, which takes almost half an hour. Usually it takes a minute.

When downloading a new install, I am maintaining a 250 mbps download speed. When I have attempted starting the simulator when it's acting up I notice that I am only receiving data while the simulator is loading at 5-10 kbps. So that makes me think it's not a RAM issue. Any ideas as to why suddenly the simulator is so incredibly slow. Yet if I open a different app or do a speed test while letting the game still try and load, I am always well above 200mbps, even when the simulator is barely communicating with the servers at low kbps speeds. Sorry to give so much info, but in the past I was a DSL troubleshooter for an install company and I always liked as much info as possible to solve a problem. So usually when I ask for help I might go a bit overboard giving feedback as I troubleshoot. I've been dealing with this issue since the upgrade in September.
