January 31, 20215 yr It's two weeks until MSFS will be out for half a year and certainly worth a "where are we now" look. At least from my perspective, yours might be different. Scenery: It's great to have the whole globe covered, that's for sure. I don't miss any Orbx region, although there are some flaws here and there. But MS/ASOBO have shown that their world updates can improve the base sim a lot, so the future seems bright here.Aircraft: Well, I have to say I was deeply disappointed here. I started my venture into MSFS with the C152 in the austrian alps, an aircraft and a region i know from my irl experience quite well, and I was a fan immediately, as I was able to navigate with the irl ICAO chart just like in the real airplane. Then I stepped up to the TBM, and that's where my disillusionment started. While looking and "feeling" great, it showed the same flawed systems behaviour as all turboprops since FS4. And I really don't want to talk about the airliners here...Avionics: MS/ASOBO opted for modeling the glass versions (I'm, on the base version of the sim) of the avionics instead of the classic "steam" versions, which would have been fine by me if they had modeled them to a satisfying degree - which is not he case. All avionics suites in MSFS are lacking a fair amount of realism, and that sucks - to keep it short.Weather: FS4 was my starting point, and some day I could not avoid the step into real aviation by obtaining my ppl. And I soon realized that weather had the largest impact on the expierience, up to the fact that sometimes I had to cancel a flight because of the weather situation. Sure, my full fledged P3D installation with Active sky provided accurate conditions, but only MSFS delivered a beleivable expierience. Just a small example: I was exploring the caribbean islands with fair weather conditions, but sure enough the weather engine provided convective clouds overhead the mountaineous terrain of the islands and leewards - just as you would expect in real life. Yes, live weather had - and has - its issues, but all in all that's the greatest achievement of this new simulator - a believable weather engine. And I am very grateful that MS/ASOBO have no intention of giving that out of their hands.Lighting: Just for the sake of completeness: nothing to write home about in other simulators, but outstanding in this one. So everything seems positive, apart of the aircraft? Here's where the community comes into play, and especially the "Fly by wire" and "Working title" teams. They have managed to take the Garmin avionics and the CJ4 and the Airbus to a whole new level. Without their efforts, I doubt that MSFS would have sustained its status as a next gen simulator. Had I not used the G3000 mod on the TBM or the CJ4 mod, I would soon have lost interest in the shiny, yet arcade seeming world of MSFS. But they continue to thrive and thus will be able to at least bridge the gap until the first 3rd party "study level" aircraft will hit the market. I surely hope they will prevail and be the "ZIBO"'s of MSFS. And to draw a conclusion: yes, MSFS is fun, and it surely has the potential to get even better!
