  1. Just fired up FS2020 after a week. Immediate CTD. I never get CTD's. Dug into things and found it was a driver update from ASUS and an app that auto-installed on my system. Something called A-volute. Uninstalled it and FS came up fine. Hope this helps someone. My suspicions are a lot of CTDs are from clashes with drivers or apps like this. "Faulting application name: FlightSimulator.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000 Faulting module name: AudioDevProps2.dll, version: 2.6.4.0, time stamp: 0x60b0a9e5 Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x000000000001ba66 Faulting process id: 0x1984 Faulting application start time: 0x01d7905fe9fd5e22 Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_1.18.15.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\FlightSimulator.exe Faulting module path: C:\ProgramData\A-Volute\A-Volute.SonicStudio3\Modules\ScheduledModules\x64\AudioDevProps2.dll Report Id: 60617870-561c-4597-9155-069c6efd4017 Faulting package full name: Microsoft.FlightSimulator_1.18.15.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe Faulting package-relative application ID: App" Bennett
  2. Fantastic news! How exciting to go from doing something you love for free to getting paid for it. I am overjoyed at some positive words from this community for a change. Bennett
  3. OOPS! Really showing I am a grumpy old man with a lousy memory! Thanks for the correction! Bennett
  4. Glenn, I think you are right, although who knows what the numbers really are. I do know that paying French wages to 200 people for the four years this thing has been in development is a huge sum, maybe as much as eighty million bucks according to my back of the envelope calculations. That is without marketing. Somebody presented a proforma of what this was going to cost, how many sales there were going to be over some period of time at some price point. And this was greenlighted by management based on that. My gut is Asobo came up with a cost they thought they could do this for, rather than a cost plus arrangement. I sure hope they were correct in their calculations...or they have someone from the defense contractors negotiating for them! Of course, there might also be stuff going on in the background to use this product to replace the base product in P3D too, so that might be a future revenue stream for MS.
  5. I am thinking they are busting their tails trying to get the Xbox release ready so they can start generating some real money to fund the long term development of this project. No way you could fund a project this massive with a couple hundred developers and management from the relatively few, scrappy hard core PC simmers out there. Unless this is going to be a pet project of upper management as a technology showcase and flagship and they don't care if it loses or makes money in the long run. But I suspect that isn't the case.
  6. Just trying to add some levity to all the doom and gloom. I am so fortunate. The thing just seems to run pretty well on my system. And I am no spring chicken, I've been an IT vendor selling MS products since the early days of the company, and go back on AVSIM to the iFLY stuff. I loved that program.
  7. I love to come on AVSIM to read about MSFS, because it reminds me of a couple of of my favorite movies of all time...starring Walter Matthou and Tony Randall. Grumpy Old Men, and... Grumpier Old Men. Too bad there is no Anne-Margret to be found here. 😆 Bennett
  8. I guess I'm getting old, forgetting exact dates in the past. LOL. But the point is the same, this sim/game is light years ahead of what we have had in the past and is only going to get better. I have been looking around for the latest parts and pieces to build the next PC for the next ten years, but I think I am going to hold off until I see what is the result of all this memory and CPU/GPU optimization Asobo was talking about in their discussion. Plus, I think VR is the way to go from now on. Presently I am running the thing through a 75" 4K TV at 2K resolution (which looks great from about eight feet away) but I am excited to experience the VR revolution. Somebody talked about this being a great sim for VFR and slow and it has a lousy autopilot. I have been flying the CJ4 with the WT mod at High settings in total IFR conditions and the autopilot works like a charm. Maybe I am just lucky. Have I had a few CTD's? Yes. Almost always when the flight plan in the FMC is slightly different that the one in the sim. Needs to be some kind of error trapping there and resolution without having the whole thing crash. Bennett
  9. Just wanted to inject a little positivity into the discourse today. I have an ancient system that I used for FSX. Built it way back in 2004 or 2005, can't remember exactly when. Has one of the first i7 CPUs with four cores. A 950 running at 3.07 GHz with 24GB of DDR3 memory. My only upgrade to this thing in fifteen years was a SSD drive and a Nvidia 1660Ti a couple months ago. I went to NWS and looked for the nastiest weather on the national radar map, thought I would fly it to see what I got just for fun. Using the CJ4 with the new Working Title mods, I started at Nashville, TN, stopped in Tulsa, OK, then refiled to Wichita, KS while on the ground. I'm using Pilot2ATC. Let me just say I am very happy with the performance of this old clunker, and the weather immersion and ATC were so great. Was it 100% buttery smooth? No, and I don't expect that with this old warhorse. But was it totally enjoyable from takeoff to hand flying the final few hundred feet after breaking out at about 500 feet in driving rain on the ILS in both destinations? Absolutely! Bravo ASOBO. There are still rough edges, to be sure. But I am so optimistic for the future with this thing. Bennett
  10. Reboot fixed it. Too bad, now I can't do all the stuff around the house I was going to do. lol
  11. Was the sim updated between last night and today? And my only mod is the CRJ. That has been pulled out and restarting now. We will see.
  12. Ugh, it now keeps cycling back to the "Press any key to start" screen, then when I do that it goes back to a black screen with the circle. But the music sounds nice in the background! Happy New Year! I feel bad for these Asobo guys. I'm in the IT field and there is nothing more horrifying than waking up Monday morning to some crashed stuff and a bunch of users scowling at you. I can only imagine waking up New Years Day and having millions scowling and trying to do in flight missle repair to try to figure out what the heck is going on.
  13. So I fire up the sim this morning, it hangs on the Monument Valley screen for about ten minutes, then the "Press any key to start" screen comes up with all the beautiful watermasks and graphics. Things are still loading with a black screen and the circle spinning down and the lower right...its been another ten minutes. Is my sim possessed? Bennett
