Issues with Tower and no ATIS

After a diligent review of the forum for a similar thread....I'm getting a consistent dysfunctional dialog with the Tower and I can't recover.

XP11.5 (ATIS disabled), Win10, ActiveSky, current AIRAC and latest P2A (with ATIS)

  • Approach to KBOS with COM2 set to 135.0 for ATIS and never hear it (yes, volume on COM2 is up)

Dave,  thanks.  What about getting ATIS, say, >50nm from the airport, that's been a problem for me at KBOS, CYYT and CYHZ?

Regarding ATIS on COM2, if that's the ATIS provided by Pilot2ATC, it won't work with the secondary COM. P2A cannot play COM2 while COM1 is the active one (or vice versa). It only plays the currently selected one, so you'd either need to tune in the ATIS to COM1 or make COM2 active, both resulting in loss of radio connection to your currently assigned frequency. You can request leave frequency and return, but not listen to ATIS on a secondary radio. I found some old post on this topic in this forum where Dave confirmed this limitation, but too lazy now to look that up to be honest.

This limitation does not exist with the vanilla X-Plane ATIS. Personally I prefer the ATIS provided by Pilot2ATC, too, but then you need to deal with above radio limitation. So either use X-Plane ATIS and tune it on COM2, or use P2A ATIS and tune it on COM1. Cannot have both at the same time, unfortunately, but not a huge problem in my opinion. Would be nice if P2A could support a secondary output, but it's not the end of the world. Reasons might be related to other flightsims than X-Plane, I dont know.

Peter, that was nice of you to respond.  I keyword searched ATIS in this forum and didn't get this.  I try to not be that guy that needs to be whacked in the head for not trying to help themselves.   There is a guy who has offered up a plugin for toggling Xplane's ATIS/radios to just deal with this.  Now I get it. 

If I can get over a few minor issues with P2A, then I'll really fall in love with this app.  I have that P2A cheat sheet that I'm reviewing.  It's really up to me to adapt to it.  Thank  you.

I didn't mean to whack you. Apologies if I sounded like that. I ran into exactly the same question a few weeks ago when I noticed that P2A ATIS cannot be listend to on the non-active radio, so some really old forum post had confirmed that suspicion.

The X-Plane ATIS is not really bad, but sometimes the active runways mismatches with P2A. I tend to ignore that part, the weather report is usually identical to what the P2A ATIS would say. So all in all it's not a big deal. Another advantage is that P2A ATIS always works, while some X-Plane ATIS/AWOS frequencies are just dead. But for the sake of being able to tune it into COM2, I mostly use the X-Plane ATIS. As I understand it, Dave had built the P2A ATIS for flightsims which do not offer a build-in ATIS, so it was probably never meant for X-Plane.

Toggling X-Plane ATIS on and off is easy, I have some quick Lua script for that. Or just get a dataref editor plugin and toggle the dataref manually on-the-fly.

Pilot2ATC is a great product. Is has it's quirks, but it is obvious a lot of effort was put into it. Overall I find it extremely useful to teach myself as a casual simmer ATC phraseology and prepare myself to dabble a bit in Vatsim or PilotEdge occasionally.

Peter, you da man!  I’m a multi/instr pilot who can’t afford the planes that I really wanna fly.  The coolest planes in my logbook are the A36 Bonanza and the Rockwell Commander, but I’m more interested in the buttons and goodies in the tricked out Zibo 737.  I get to hang out with some heavy-duty simmers, one has a full-up Flight Deck Solutions cockpit (>$100K) in his spare bedroom(zibo).  He flies with VATSIM.  I’m probably ready for Pilotedge, but the 737 without a copilot can be a handful.  I’m enjoying this dialog.  Thank you.
