The C172 classic didn't involve having to rebuild the main panel plus they had a mechanically identical version in the G1000 to provide access to files that might otherwise be locked. As for the versions, there's never really been an effective upgrade option for people who opted to get the base version originally so there may be a significant number of people who you might expect to have the premium/deluxe aircraft but only have the base pack.
