Tunes of Glory...

Featured Replies

One of my favorite military movies was on TCM last night.  It's not a war movie but takes place in a Scottish town with a Scottish battalion that has been there for 200 years.

Alec Guiness is the commander, an easy going acting colonel who rose through the ranks and got a battle field commission during WW2 in Africa against Rommel.

He is replaced by John Mills, a Sandhurst colonel who spent WW2 in a POW camp.  He's a strict spit and polish officer who disdains the former commander's easy going style even to scheduling dance lessons three mornings a week to replace the raucous dancing the officers are used to in the mess.

It is a clash of leadership styles in which neither party gives and inch.

When I was in the Weather Flight our wing mandated that 1 day a year out of our monthly weekend drills be devoted to leadership seminars.  When I first got there our commander had the troops view 12 O'Clock High as a leadership seminar.  I suggested Tunes of Glory might be a better choice so we played both movies on leadership day.   I still hold that Tunes of Glory is a better example of two types of leadership styles in which elements from each would constitute a better fit as opposed to the clashing of two senior officers on how to lead.

I have it on VHJS but never bothered to get the DVD version of it...

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

So I bought the book.

 LOL

And... having read the book, now I want the movie. Drat.

I think I'll get it too after I finish the adult version of Fly Like a Girl.

Alec Guiness and John Mills play off each other beautifully.  You'll enjoy the movie.
