this should be ease:

just started using the option to have co pilot answer radio calls. there is also a box to check for "Co pilot changes frequency"

now what I want to do is just have the co pilot change frequency. but every time I answer a call the box for co pilot answers automatically get checked, so next call he answers.

If you uncheck both options, then check the "Changes Frequency" option, the Responds to Radio option should remain unchecked.

It sounds like you might have your PTT button also set as the button to toggle the CoPilot on and off, or something along those lines.  Be sure to disable and clear the button and hotkey settings just below the two options for the Copilot.
