Symbolic Link & Multiple Computers

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

Quick question to those that are familiar with setting up symbolic links.

Is it possible to set up a 10TB MyCloud EX2 Ultra over a 2.5GB network that contains all my United States photoreal scenery and have all four of my computers (XP server and three visual computers) access the data via symbolic links? I think this will work, but not sure about any transfer delays that may end up as screen issues.

Anyone try this?

Thanks

Mike, not sure if a symlink is possible with a url. Never tried it. Give it a go

The problem is even such a high speed link can have fluctuations a little bit . Your computer ethernet should be a minimum of 1gbit because the link is going to super fast at the ethernet level

Oh that is an external hdd ? Thought it's a url because of "mycloud"

Is it a nas drive ? Or a Jbod ?

Hmm have never tried symlink for a network drive and also there will be the latency between the transfer and how fast the system is eating the orthos .

Best is to try it out and see but even if the network link works I do expect some sync issues

mklink /D f:\tempxpfolder\\server\share\orthos

give it a try

curious did it work ? and how is the performance if it did ?

Hi,

Just getting started, looking to do the entire United States in Photoreal. So far setting up the symbolic link works, the server and three visual computers see the link. I'm looking over KLAX as I type this.

Next, time to test the performance.

I'll keep you posted.

Hi,

So far I've checked KLAX, KMDW, KLGA, KDFW... working just fine around the airports. Now I want to see what happens when I cross state lines. One thing to note, initial load times are longer.

Hi,

Well, aside from a longer load time and I can deal with that... I see no difference while flying between states, no lag at all. This is doable!

If this works just as well at a higher ZL and I only have to create one massive server for all my United States photoreal scenery, XP12 even without the seasons (using photoreal) may turn out to be a major jump for my simulator eye candy experience.

This was a nice find!

Hi,

The view out the right window in the NY area. The NAS drive is supplying data to all four computers via symbolic links. Jump to 5 minutes into the video, the city streets look great.

Nice that's it's working , load times could be related to the network.
