MSFS 2020 Install on Win 10 PC - Device? What Device?

Featured Replies

I just installed an SSD on my Win10 PC in preparation for installation of MSFS on it from the Microsoft Store. After Microsoft instantly took my money, I encountered a page that asked me where I wanted to install it and asked for a device. Huh? It was looking for a serial number for an X box, not a PC. Confused, I called support 3 times with no answers forthcoming on how to proceed (and a lot of phone issues on their part). Bottom line...on the third call I asked for a refund. The download apparently doesn't start until you provide a device serial number.

I realize I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but why are they making it so cryptic? Am I the only one who has been stopped from downloading by this irrelevant question?

The installation process is full of potential problems... but you do not need a device serial number for your PC.

You need to get your MS account and the XBOX (Live) app to talk to each other and then it just works..

Simply put, install the Xbox app from the Microsoft store and make sure you are logged into both the store and the Xbox app with the same account you purchased MSFS with.
You should get an option in the Microsoft store to install MSFS on your PC then.

It's not rocket science, but the process should certainly be more intuitive.

That should qualify as the "Understatement of the Year" 🙂
