Pantry Day...

Featured Replies

The UK has Boxing Day the day after Christmas.  I have Pantry Day the day after New Year's Eve.

We have a walk-in pantry in the kitchen.  Not exactly a walk-in pantry, but you can stand in it and close the door behind you.  A pantry with 5 shelves and an onion box on the floor.

I like to keep things organized but my wife, who has no situational awareness or sense of organization, makes the pantry a helter-skelter affair where you have two or three half opened boxes of the same thing as well as multiple spray cans of all kinds of cooking all...many of them duplicates.

So every New Year's Day I drag the trash can to the pantry and go about emptying out the unused stuff, especially grainy stiff like oatmeal and flour and breadcrumbs and rice that have been opened and hatched bugs over the year.

So shelf by shelf I take everything out.  Carefully wipe down the shelf and spray it with disinfectant.  Then I sort out the good stuff, put it back on the shelf and throw the opened and duplicate stuff away.

The pantry looks nice now.  Everything is organized.  And in a month or so, after a couple of trips to the supermarket, she will start the disorganization process again.

But I love her non the less.  After 53 years I have to.

By the way, here's a tip.  If you have room put containers or boxes of grain like flour and rice and breadcrumbs and the like in your refrigerator or freezer to keep the bugs from hatching.

Quick hint for the storage of flour, rice, and grainy stuff.....plastic Tupperware type storage containers with good sealing tops will keep the little buggers out.  I do keep the flour in the bottom shelf of the fridge. I have pull-out pantry storage shelves in my island next to the oven  No bugs/ants ever!

That's a good tip Charlie.  I'm going to make a rive dish for supper tonight and early this morning I opened a box of Zatterans rice and it had bugs in it.  It had been on the shelf a long time.  They hatch from the eggs that are in all grainy stuff.  Perhaps being sealed in Tupperware prevents them from hatching.

We don't have an ant or roach problem.  We have a guy who comes in every three months and sprays the baseboards inside the house and around the base of the house outside.  We periodically find dead centipedes, those huge orange ones we have here in the southwest, on the floor.  They are either dead or in their death throes.

What?  No snakes in the house?  They are good for rodent control!

We have four cats for rodent control.  And sometimes bird control.
