Changing arrival runway

Recommended Posts

Noted this in the Beta 2N release notes, and it raised some questions I've been struggling with:

Quote
  • Improves Arrival Runway request and allows it after you have been given the arrival information

What is the appropriate/best way to request a change of arrival runway, and when?  For example, when P2ATC & Traffic Global disagree, and I want to align to TG so I'm not running nose-first into outbound traffic.  After the "Expect..." call, or when I'm handed off to approach?  And what would be the appropriate phrasing?

I've tried a few different variations with mixed success, but more often than not I end up with either a confused routing, or never hearing from ATC again, regardless of any further callouts from me.  I fully expect that it's user error, so trying to get a better feel for how to handle it.

The phrase is "<CallSign> request arrival runway two five left" for example.  This should be done either before or shortly after you get your expected arrival information.  Waiting much later causes problems because you're too far into the arrival for the changes to make sense.

Thanks, Dave, that makes sense.

I suspect I've probably been waiting too late.  I'll try to get on that earlier next time, and see how it goes.
