VC performance in SP1

Featured Replies

After installing SP1, I tried a simply flight around KSEA and KSFO to see how performance was. One thing I noticed right away was panning in the VC was very slow and not fluid like it was prior to SP1. I have not done any tweaks yet, other than playing around with the sliders and seeing the impact on FPS. In 2D cockpit, FPS are consistently higher and flying is very smooth. As soon as I go to VC, FPS drops almost 50% as panning becomes very sloppy. I have a 19'' WS monitor, so flying in 2D on a WS hurts the eyes!!!Did SP1 cause this?Chris

I don't know, but I can tell you that on my setup, the VC's in SP1 are *much* smoother in panning and every aspect.The VC's are awesome now!RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian

Chris,Is this with a glass panel VC?You could try this tweak from Phil Taylors blog. Add the the following two lines to your GRAPHICS section in fsx.cfg....DirtyRegionUpdateLimit=1MergeDirtyRegionUpdates=1....For some graphics cards setting DirtyRegionUpdateLimit=1 (to revert to default, just insert a comment character before the line:;DirtyRegionUpdateLimit=1The MergeDirtyRegionUpdates is default 0 (zero). You'll find more details on Phil's blog (http://blogs.msdn.com/ptaylor/default.aspx).Hope it helps.Ulf B

Thanks,I haven't tried a glass panel yet. I tried both the 172 and Baron and noticed the same behaviour.I will check out the blog and see if I can make sense of it.Cheers,Chris

I think its more that your at KSEA and KSFO than SP1. I can't even get off the runway at SFO, its so slow and choppy. I've always used KDCA as my performance test airport, since its detailed, DC is right there with all its fancy buildings, and there's Dulles and BWI right nearby with all their AI planes to bring me down even more. I went from like pre-SP1 4 fps to 20 fps there, but I go to SFO and its like .5. Something about that place is murder. JFK, ATL, LAX, and ORD don't perform as bad as SFO for some reason. Not that this is any help solving a problem. Just that I've suffered the same problem but with no explanation I can come up with.

>>Not that this is any help solving a problem. Just that I've>suffered the same problem but with no explanation I can come>up with.So you also experience a 50% loss of fps when switching from 2D to VC? I hardly notice any difference in fps and have definitely not any 50% fps drop.Ulf B

Its like there's some rule I don't know about forbidding me from ever flying in or out of there :D

>Could it be hardware related? I'm have an Radeon X1300 Pro>with 7.4 Catalysts.>>ChrisI'll answer my own question... I found the source, at least I think I did. When I turn AA on in the game and turn it off in the CCC the FPS drops off considerably in VC (2D is fine). When I use AA from the CCC only, FPS is very consistent (around 30 fps - locked @ 30) in VC. The crappy thing is that using AA through CCC doesn't look that great even if I go up to 6X AA.Why is that?Chris

>Could it be hardware related? I'm have an Radeon X1300 Pro>with 7.4 Catalysts.>>ChrisUnlikely. FS2002 hasn't ever been installed on this machine (fancy pants Core 2 Duo E6600, etc) and was only ever on my old P3.Actually now I wish I still had FS2002! I bet it would be able to handle all the AI aircraft I could throw at it now. And probably do it at like 120 fps.

I had to go to an earlier version of Catalyst to get the AA (set in Card Software), to work in FSX. I am not sure if this started with SP1, or is the later ATI CC's. I notice the download size are smaller for versions after the ATI January version. I used the earlier version released in Jan 2007 at ATI site, and it works. On the latest CCC (Apr 2007), I could set the AA to 6X and run FSX and it did pretty much nothing, jagged lines everywhere. Setting AA in FSX caused too much stuttering and performance hit for my PC/Video card combo. I need to get a better video card.Dell PentiumD 3.0GHZ1.5GB DDR2 MemoryATI X600 Video19"Dell FP1907 Monitor

I might try switching back to the 7.2 catalysts. I don't remember having this issue with that version. I was using those until SP1 came out. Never bothered going with 7.3 Cats.Chris

The 7.4 cats was the version that AA didn't work for me. I went back to the 7.1, it worked for my X600- I haven't tried the cat 7.2 or 7.3 versions.

As another poster said, AA is broken in the Cat 7.4s for *alot* of people (myself included). I rolled back to 7.3 which performs fine for me on my 1950X.
