Local heroes and the aquatic panic attack!

Featured Replies

There I was, off for a walk on a nice sunny day, when I spied a bare chested man running along the sea wall, 30 foot drop to his right. You do see such strange behaviour around here from time to time, and I admit, concepts like small population, inbreeding and genetic mutation do pass through my mind. Suddenly he began shouting and pointing franticly to a guy in the bay, clearly panicking and on the cusp of drowning.

Two other guys were already at the scene, one detached the life ring and the other was preparing  to swim out to him, I guess our drowning swimmer was about 20 yards from the slipway. The guy that was running the wall swam out first. Just as he reached our supposedly drowning swimmer he stopped, stood up and yelled, "oh for (expletive here) sake, he can reach the bottom, its just chest high".  🤣😁

Clearly the guy was having a panic attack and had no idea his feet could reach the bottom. All credit to the guys that attempted a rescue though, they didn't waste much time and surely would have saved his life if  it had been a real emergency. Police arrived at the scene, I suspect that when the life ring had been detached it set off an alarm that alerted them.

I then weaved my way through the tourists that had stopped to watch (cruise ships are back after the pandemic) and headed for the ice cream man for a medium cone with a flake. 👍

Tomorrow is Liberation Day, celebrating the liberation of the islands at the end of WW2. Impressive firework display usually. Hopefully no more swimmers with panic attacks.
