Very poor performance in VR

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,
I urgently need your help.
Specs:
i7-12700k
RTX 2080 Super
32 GB RAM 2133Mhz
Settings: Oculus Rift S performance on RTX and OXR toolkit SU9 - #7 by FSC719 1

Latly I played around in the settings to get VR working properly. I got 35 FPS in PMDG 737 when spawning right on the runway with engines on. Then when I turn my head it went down to 25 which is still pretty good. But then I tried a full flight and FPS went down very fast. At first I had around 30 FPS on the stand with a CPU Usage of only 20% and GPU at around 80 - 90%. From there on it got worse. at pushback I only had 15 left. At takeoff when looking around it got to 5. Then the GPU usage decreased to around 30%.
So my question is why is usage so low respectively decreasing so much. And why is it that FPS go down when looking around.
I really need your help. Looking forward to every answer!
Best regards

SU9 is causing all sorts of performance issues for many folks. I was suffering from low FPS and stuttering every few seconds at complex airports, which I seem to have fixed by removing all photogrammetry cities from world updates (they even affect countries you are not currently flying in!) to restore FPS as outlined here and reducing terrain and object LOD until stuttering ceased. Hopefully these are fixed in a hotfix soon or by SU10 at the latest.

Thanks for the answer. Already heard FPS went down by far after SU9, hope it will be fixed in the next update. But I will definitly try to uninstall PG cities, I really hope that does the magic. Also what would you recommend for LODs in VR?

I ended up going back to 100 for both LODs and haven't seen a stutter since. I could probably go higher but I am so enjoying a smooth simming experience that I don't want to push my luck.

Alright thanks a lot. 100 is enough for me. So with that you did not experience any stutters when moving? Have you done any other significant changes of import settings?

I did a two hour group flight last night in the PMDG 737 into KBOS bad weather and everything was smooth, whether moving or not.

Another point to note is that there is another bug in SU9 where your initial loading into a flight will result in much lower FPS than normal with a spinning load circle in the bottom right of the screen (not visible in VR). This lasts for a couple of minutes then FPS recovers to normal so the solution is just to ignore initial low FPS and continue your cockpit flow and it should have corrected itself well before you taxi.

I'm not sure what you mean by import settings, but I can summarise my overall system config for MSFS as follows which is currently netting me a smooth 30 - 40 FPS anywhere:

  • Debloated nVidia 512.77 driver install per here
  • Nvidia Control Panel: Max Frame Rate: 40 FPS, Power Management: Prefer maximum performance, Texture filtering - Negative LOD bias: Clamp
  • Windows Game Mode: ON
  • Windows HAGS: OFF
  • Windows Quick Boot: Disabled
  • Windows Registry: Disabled NDU per https://www.diskpart.com/windows-11/high-memory-usage-windows-11-0001.html
  • Windows Power Profile: High Performance
  • MSFS Rolling Cache: OFF (even on only a 50 Mbps internet connection)
  • MSFS VR Graphics Settings: Mostly a mixture of ultra/max at the top and high/max-1 at the bottom, but importantly clouds and texture resolution no more than high, texture supersampling and bloom off, and glass cockpit refresh rate at medium. Render resolution is very GPU and VR headset setting dependent but I end up with 2800x2800 per eye with my 3080 and G2.
  • MSFS 2D Graphics Settings: doesn't matter EXCEPT texture resolution must be set to the same as VR, otherwise it overrides what your VR setting ends up using. (I saw this on a YouTube MSFS guide but can't remember which one now).

Thank you a lot for taking your time to summarise!

Sorry I meant important settings.

I'm gonna try these and hope for the best, would be very happy if these worked fine for me. If I end up ith more than 25 FPS this would be totally fine for me.

Are you overclocking? If so, try removing it. MSFS doesn't seem to like overclocking. The cpu overheats and throttles. That might explain why the performance is ok to begin with but then degrades.

Also, don't get your hopes up with the NVIDA control panel stuff. It's mostly placebo.

MSFS setting-wise, stick to medium to medium-high and low or off for shadows etc. here's hardly any discenrable quality difference for many things as soon as you go over medium, but the performance hit can be substantial.

Thanks for you answer. Haven't done any overclocking since I just got the CPU new. What I expirienced today was pretty good performance on ground. But as sonn as I took off it went down to stutters when looking around and even when looking just forward. So I was wondering what the best setting for ASW is. Should it stay off or on. And if so which setting (Hz)?

It depends on your hardware's capabilitites. I can get away with Auto most of the time and occasionally (at large hubs in advanced airliners) I have to lock it to 30hz. On my old system I had to lock it at 18hz basically all the time. Stutters come when the real FPS drop down below what you've set in OTT, e.g., if you lock it at 30hz, real fps has to stay at or ideally above that at all times.
