I learned a new game last night...

When I was a boy and there was a family gathering the folks always played penny ante poker after dinner.  I guess I started when I was about 7 years old.  I got pretty good at it but after leaving home I never played again. In the service it was always Pinochle or Hearts and never for money.

I’ve been to Reno a couple of times and to Las Vegas a number of times.

Whenever I was home on leave my Mom wanted to drive to Reno.  She loved to gamble.  Nothing big.  Mostly slot machines and Keno.  We went twice.

When I was stationed at 29 Palms Vegas wasn’t that far away and we went several times.  Never won much, never lost much, never gambled much.  I loved Black Jack and while taking a break from the Black Jack table I would put a few quarters in the slot machine or sit down and play Keno for a while.

When Betty and I were living in Denver we went to Vegas for a long weekend a couple times a year.  Only once did we win big.  We came home with 900 dollars more than we came with.  Bettty had a small book titled How to Win at Blackjack.  We played ourselves following the rules for several months before we went to try the system out.  We stuck to it and won big (for us).

The one thing I never learned to do was shoot craps.  Until last night.  We were at a friends home and the guys wanted to shoot craps.  I had never done it before.  I didn't even know the rules.  We played for dimes and I lost a couple of bucks.  But now I finally know how to shoot craps.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

This conjures up a vision; of a bunch of seniors struggling to get down on their knees to play, and struggling twice as hard to get back up.

LOL

I have no problem getting up off me knees Sue.  I just have to crawl to a chair or a table or something I can grab onto and pull myself up with my arms.

I went to Reno with my Mom twice when I was on leave.  But she and a friend and my Dad would go up once a month on a special bus.  They left Saturday morning, stayed overnight, and came back Sunday evening.

One trip the bus driver won really big and quite.  He was going to remain there and become a professional gambler.  They had to stay an extra day before the bus company could get another driver up there to take them back home.

She said a couple months later they got on the bus and the old driver was back in the driver's seat.  He'd been wiped out in a month.

I guess some people are good at gambling and can make a profession out of it.  But not many.  And they have to have enough money held back to cover themselves when the going gets lean.
