August 13, 20223 yr I mounted my GPU horizontally with an Asus Rog Strix PCIE riser cable, as it runs slightly cooler facing the 240mm external case fan. No issues with the riser cable, but don't go for the cheap chinese ones. The main disadvantage is you have to modify the back of your case for a horizontal install if you still want access to all your external DP ports, but some motherboards cannot fit these larger cards unless you use the riser cable regardless. The horizontal install is fine, but I used wire ties to hold the card stable, but you can also use a variety of inserts that you can purchase or some cards come with some 3M sticky mounts you can use for a horizontal install.
