how much fps gains if foveated rendering on flatscreen?

Featured Replies

flatscreen msfs + tobii foveated rendering = 300% fps gains and more?

when i read text on flatscreen monitor, only the word in my center if sharp, everything else unsharp. so that would mean .. tons of fps increase? 3 cm next to my center could easily be 30% of the resolution of my center of the eye.

if 100% of your screen is at the monitors native res and u get 40 fps in EDDF...

then what would happen if only 1-2% of your screen is at 100% and the rest is 10%? holy word not allowed 😄  why is the holy m0ly word not allowed?

Hopefully some knowledgeable avsimmers will be along shortly. I'm at sea.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

Not sure if 300% fps gains are realistic -- I would suspect it very much depends on what you're currently limited by (CPU or GPU), as foveation benefits are more easily obtained for the GPU part of the rendering pipeline. And of course, Asobo would have to implement foveated rendering support in the first place (it's something that needs to be implemented in the game engine itself).

To get an idea of the potential gains, you could turn your render scaling down to, say, 10%. That should give you an approximation of the potential that would be there with foveated rendering, if implemented well. I suspect the increase will be well short of 300% though, as the bottleneck will shift to some part of the pipeline where the effort doesn't depend on the resolution.

(Disclaimer: I've done some work with foveated video rendering, but I don't have any first-hand experience with foveated 3D rendering.)
