Microphone Echo

Featured Replies

Hello!

I have recently started using Pilot2ATC and have had no trouble until now.
When I try talk to ATC, I don't get a response. I have tested everything in the P2A Gramar Checker, and I have found out that my microphone is echoing.
It doesn't echo anywhere else except for P2A. And it seems to escalate the more I use the app.

Anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks!

When you press the Replay button in Grammar Helper, you are hearing what Windows is sending to the program.  If you have an echo, I would check the Audio Input/Recording Device settings in Windows.

Right-click on the Speaker icon in the Task bar and be sure the "Spatial Sound" setting is turned off.

  • Select Sound from the pop-up menu and it will open the Control Panel Sound Settings.
  • Select your Microphone and press the Properties button.
  • On the Listen tab, check the "Listen to this device" option and see if you hear the echo or distortion
  • On the Levels tab, check that the boost is turned down to where you don't get the echo.  Play around with this and the Volume setting to try and eliminate the echo.
  • On the Advanced tab, set the "Default Format" to one of the CD or DVD quality settings.

Hello
Thanks for replying!

I just listened to my microphone in the properties window and there is no echo.
I also don't have any boost options under the "Levels" tab
And my microphone is set to "2 Channel, 16bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality)"

Sounds like the settings are OK.  Make sure you turn off the "Listen to this device" option after your testing.

The only other thing I can think of is some sort of feedback in the headset, or possibly an issue with the headset driver if it does not use the standard Windows sound drivers.  Try updating the drivers.

Another thing you can try is using a different headset.  Even an inexpensive one.  I use an $10 headset with a 3.5mm jack on a regular basis.

Hello!

I have just found out that it only echos when MSFS Isn't running.
Does this mean I cannot run both at the same time?

Thanks

I'm confused.  Do you mean it echos only when MSFS is running?

Make sure you have all the MSFS ATC options turned off:

Options -> Assistance->Piloting->AI Radio Communications (ATC) - OFF
Options -> Assistance->Navigation Aids->Route & Waypoints - OFF
Options -> Assistance->Navigation Aids->Taxi Ribbon = OFF
Options -> Assistance->Navigation Aids->Landing Path - OFF
Options -> Assistance->User Experience->ATC UI Panel Open at Start - OFF
Options -> Assistance->User Experience->Show Message Log in ATC Menu- OFF
Options -> Assistance->User Experience->ATC Voices - OFF

That might fix the problem.

Sorry,
That didn't really make sense.

When I try talk in the Grammar Helper, It my voice echos like it is in a tunnel
But sometimes, when MSFS is closed, it doesn't echo.

Hope that makes sense.

Hello again,

I have just now found out that Pilot2ATC is taking my microphone input and my windows output and mixing them together.
So, when audio plays from my computer, it will faintly place it in the back of my microphones sound which confuses the recognition engine.
Anyway I can fix that?

Thanks!

That's not something Pilot2ATC could do.  If it were, other users would be having the same issue.

The only way I know it might be happening is if you have the "Listen to this device" option checked in the Microphone settings in Windows.

Your headset, sound driver, sound mixer or sound card could potentially be doing this as well, but I don't know how you could fix that, short of being sure the drivers are up to date and try a different headset.

Here are some things you can check, if you haven't already:

  •  STERO MIX: Be sure that you have this turned off if it is an option.
  •  HEADSET AS DEFAULT PLAYBACK AND RECORDING DEVICE: If you have a headset mic set as the default Recording/Audio Input device, be sure and set the Headset as the Default Playback/Audio Output device.  Some users have had their microphone not working because  they set their Speakers as the Playback device.
  •  NOISE CANCELLING HEADSET: If you have a noise cancelling headset like used in real aircraft to reduce engine noise, these may not work with the Speech Recognition.  Try using a standard PC headset.
  • DEFAULT COMMUNICATIONS DEVICE: If using a headset as the default Playback/Recording device, be sure it is not also being used as the Default Communications Device.  This assignment of multiple duties seems to cause a problem.  Likewise, be sure the microphone is not assigned to any other duties besides the default audio input device.
  • SOUND DRIVERS AND ADD ON PROGRAMS - Many PCs come with Sound Add On programs from the manufacturer that are run at startup.  Some of these programs may "Capture" the microphone and prevent Pilot2ATC from hearing it.  Also, some addons may have such features.  Check to be sure there are not other sound programs running.  Also be sure that you have the latest Audio Drivers for your Microphone installed.
  • REMOVE SONIC SUITE Check your PC for a program named Sonic Suite and remove it.  It prevents the Speech Recognition from working.  This is common on new PCs from ASUS and other manufacturers.
  • Sound Bar or Other Sound Hardware AddOns Some users have reported that disconnecting sound hardware equipment like a Sound Bar or external speakers resolved the problem of a Mic not working.
