Colour Correcting Ortho for XP12

Featured Replies

I have downloaded the USA and Europe Ortho for XP12.  I have used the tools in Ortho4XP to use Google as the base map, but to also use other map providers where Google colours are poor.  I would now like to use a graphics editing program to edit the tiles for better colour accuracy.  I wondered if anybody here has already done this and could recommend a program to use?  I have seen a few like GIMP, but this is a new field for me so I would appreciate some pointers.

Maybe useful to be able to batch correct images?

If you want to get into this, and do it properly and correctly, you'll need something a little beefier than Gimp.

I hate subscription based software, unless I absolutely need it.  So in your case, if the budget allows for it, I recommend Affinity Photo.  I've used it for years and I've used it for the TBM and Challenger.

It's a 1 time purchase, and you get free updates for the life of the version run.  On top of that, you get 40% off until 25th January.

Thanks for this suggestion.  As I am just starting out I have a couple of questions.

1.  Does Affinity Photo allow batch editing of the ortho tiles (once I get proficient doing a single image!).
2.  I believe it is the DDS files I'll be editing - does it read (and save in correct format) those files?

I feel I have used Ortho4XP to the full (wonder what the new version brings?), and now I want to take it further.  So many Google tiles are mis-coloured, have wrong colour temperature and many other issues.  Some areas are perfect and a joy to fly over, but others not so.

I have plenty of time to use and learn, but I want to start with the right tool that others have used with X-Plane - don't want to go down the wrong path multiple times!

I have no experience with editing ortho tiles.  But it does allow for batch editing.

No editing software, that I know of, can edit a dds file.  You'll have to convert it to a png file first.  Make your edits.  Save as png.  Then convert back to dds.

If you don't feel like making a commitment right now, Affinity Photo has a free 1 month trial.  Give it a go and see how you like it.
