St. Lawrence (Part Deux!)

St. Lawrence River (Part Deux!)      (And a small portion of the Rideau Canal)

We continue our journey along the St. Lawrence River. Well almost. Last trip we took a diversionary turn up the northern passage and followed that Ottawa River to the City of Ottawa. We also traveled over some of the Rideau River in Ottawa before ending that journey at Ottawa International (CYOW). That is where we continue in this following excursion.

I had a choice of either travelling along the Rideau Canal from Ottawa directly southward all the way down to the city of Kingston, Ontario which is located on Lake Ontario at the mouth of the St. Lawrence but that would cause us to miss most of the most scenic parts of the St. Lawrence. So instead, decided to take you out of Ottawa and head southward along a small portion of the Rideau Canal to the city of Kemptville, Ontario. On the way we’ll pass a few sets of locks on the Rideau” before reaching the city of Kemptville.

At Kemptville (Bedell) we’ll jump on Canadian Pacific’s Winchester Subdivision. (This trackage runs between Smiths Falls, to our west, and Montreal to our east). We’ll head east traveling over the double track section from Bedell to “Mountain” then to “Winchester”. (This section of trackage is part of the CP Main line that runs between Toronto and Montreal). (At Winchester, we’ll veer southeast from the tracks heading over the town of Winchester then a  “b-line” in a southeast direction direct to the city of Cornwall which is situated on the north side of the St. Lawrence River.

At Cornwall, we’ll head west along the most scenic section of the St. Lawrence, home of the Thousand Islands, some 182 km (113 miles), which will lead us through towns of Massena, Morrisburg: (poi Upper Canada Village), Iroquois, Prescott, Brockville, Ivy Lea, Gananoque, then to some of the sites in the larger city of Kingston, Ontario: These including Fort Henry, Royal Military College of Canada (university facilities and historical buildings, the port area, downtown Kingston and the former Kingston Penitentiary, which was decommissioned as a maximum security prison in 2013: now a museum.

Departing Kingston continue to head westward along the coast of Lake Ontario, to Picton then a sharp right north turn that will lead us to the Bay of Quinte, then west again along the Bay of Quinte to the cities of Belleville and Trenton, Ontario. We’ll end this trip at Trenton Airport which is Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton, (CYTR). Also located on the grounds of CFB Trenton is the National Air Force Museum of Canada which has 35 aircraft on display both inside the Museum and in the RCAF Memorial Airpark.

For takeoff on Wednesday, set the simulator @14:00 local.  Prefer to fly real weather if possible but if not, few clouds or High Clouds preset might make a nice choice.
