February 10, 20233 yr Travelling the “Trent”img]https://i.imgur.com/xDVEsho.jpg[/img] Welcome to the Trent-Severn Waterway in Ontario Canada. Our last trip found us traveling the St. Lawrence River concluding at CFB Trenton (CYTR) on the edge of Lake Ontario. This trip we will continue our journey from Trenton CYTR heading west over Lake Ontario but only for a brief moment. We are turning northward to connect to an inland waterway: the Trent-Severn Waterway which connects two Great Lakes: Lake Ontario, at Trenton to Lake Huron (Georgian Bay) at Port Severn. Its major natural waterways include the Trent River, Otonabee River, Kawartha Lakes, Lake Simcoe, Lake Couchiching and the Severn River all of which we will try to travel today. This inland waterway system was started in 1833 and completed in 1920. The Trent-Severn Waterway is connected via interconnected rivers, lakes, locks and canals. There are 45 Locks on this inland water system so that boats can travel this 386 km (240 mile) inland waterway segments which are of varying height. Today we'll travel low and slow along this water see the various locks and follow the waterway route. ] Lock 01 of Trent-Severn Waterway is just up river from Trenton where we will begin our trip. Lock 45 is some 240 miles away at the entrance to Georgian Bay on Lake Huron at Port Severn. In this trip, we'll "Fly the Trent-Severn Waterway" from beginning to end with an official “airport” stop at Peterborough CYPQ, home of one of only two hydraulic lift locks on the Waterway, this is Lock 21 and is the highest hydraulic lift lock in the world. It opened on July 9, 1904. The only other official or genuine “airport” stopover will be in the city of Lindsay, CNF4, which is close to lock 33 that allows water travel southward from Lindsay, down the Scugog River to Lake Scugog and the city of Port Perry, Ontario. But we have three other stops to be made: those of the unofficial kind... Those being water stops! We’ll stop on Pigeon Lake, then head to my place on *Balsam Lake (to have some quick refreshments before we continue our journey). Note: Balsam Lake is the highest elevation of navigable water in Canada (at 841 ft) and third highest in the world. Our third water stop will be on Lake Simcoe. It is the fourth largest Lake in the entire province of Ontario: Once we depart here, we’ll head for Port Severn via the waterway and onto our final destination at Midland Airport, CYEE, which is nestled in on the east side of Lake Huron... If we’re short on time, we can land on Georgian Bay just over the Port Severn Bridge and water taxi to a dockage or beach close to the harbor at Port Severn… which leads us to a brief discussion concerning the aircraft that has to be used for this trip. Aircraft A mix of land and water landings, hmmm, and low and slow…er. It is clear that we had better use a Floater/Amphibian aircraft for this trip. There are quite a few suitable aircraft out there, like the C172 Amphibian in G1000 or Classic, a G21 Goose, a XCub Amphibian or the new DHC-2 Beaver Amphibian etc. Use whatever you wish but make sure it's an amphibian! I'm planning to be in the new MSFS DHC-2 Beaver Amphibian in brand new RTMM Livery just released. February 21, 20233 yr Norm, the Wikipedia story of how the Trent-Severn Waterway was built is absolutely precious. It just goes to show that behind the construction of every national treasure, there is a motley collection of scalawags pursuing their own self-interest. 😄 --Mike MacKuen
February 22, 20233 yr Author And after it was all over and millions of $$ spent: intended for commercial ship traffic, but when done it was qay too small/narrow and additionally there was too many levels which would sure not expedite the ships even if they could pass through. If it were not for the thousands or pleasure crafts like mine out thereto give the lock system some use if would have been all for nought. (someone definitely should have got fired!!). We had a smaller cabin cruiser when we were transients on the lock system: https://i.imgur.com/sdHxul4.jpg A few of my snaps of a few lock location "signs" as we travel through: And some travelling on the water way: A few more snaps of travelling the waterway (links only as not to crack the parameters of this posting form!) https://i.imgur.com/rRGuNV8.jpg https://i.imgur.com/WXEBfaU.jpg https://i.imgur.com/cDVNv9u.jpg https://i.imgur.com/gkigMaG.jpg https://i.imgur.com/pT4p6ub.jpg https://i.imgur.com/p0p7Qyz.jpg Remember to bring your Floats for this trip!!
