July 13, 20232 yr I have this e.g. south of GCFV (above) but also elsewhere. Not in every roundabout, but in many. I'm using the simheaven scenery and I have the suspicion, since the Microsoft building footprints were incorporated, these buildings in roundabouts appear. It kills the immersion. July 14, 20232 yr Moderator Yes, this is exactly what is happening. I used the same building footprints to fill in missing data when I made the TrueEarth USA series, and we had to spend a lot of time cleaning up bad data. AI is very very good, but it can certainly detect things as buildings that clearly aren't, e.g. lakes, boats, etc. This one could be a fairly easy fix (Remove buildings colliding with roads) so I'll chat with Armin at Simheaven about it for perhaps the next version of xWorld
July 14, 20232 yr Author Not necessary, Tony. Basically it is (or was?) a good idea, to use the MS bulding footprints, as they fill some gaps. Obviously even where no gaps are, though ... I.e. these footprints seem to be broken. Meanwhile I also found buildings on the Nile and lakes, where actually ships run. However, meanwhile I downloaded a newer version from simheaven, and as far as I understand from reading elsewhere, the guy behind simheaven eliminated the buildings in roundabouts and houses on the Nile (see above an example from Cairo), lakes etc. himself. Simheaven is basically ONE guy (with some helpers, who contribute buildings and textures) and he achieved 👍 what a multibillion company as MS obviously wasn't able to do. July 14, 20232 yr Moderator This is what I'm saying... the only way to resolve this issue is mostly just to clean it up by hand or use some algorithms to check for potential conflicting buildings. Considering the amount of buildings and the size of the world, it's not really feasible to do this by hand so there needs to be some leeway. Using the Microsoft building footprint gives far more benefit than it would not using them. P.S. The same issues can and do happen in MFS which uses the same data.
July 14, 20232 yr The OP could always contribute to the project, it is on GitHib and does welcome comments and improvements. The project does give 999 million building outlines, and for FREE. That is a pretty good deal. It's easy to sit at home and moan about Microsoft, but if it really does break the immersion for you, uninstall. I am happy Microsoft have given the community 999 million building outlines for free.
July 14, 20232 yr Author Well ... ya know, my friend ... I've seen so many posts here moaning and making a mountain out of a molehill, I have every right to do so as well 🤪. Apart from that, it's not my task to do Microsofts job and rectify their errors. BTW, these are not my words, I've seen such here more than often ("It's not my job to do LR's job ...", when some people - the so called usual suspects - were requested to report bugs or even only hickups in XP). See? That's the people I like the most: moaning for the sake of moaning, but unwilling to contribute anything. I myself have already contributed much to the community (e.g. openstreetmap since July 2008 - 366,692 changesets = over 58,000 buildings, and more - see below) that also MS benfits from it here and there. Had MS done its job 😁, Tony and many others would have saved a lot of work. As I wrote further above, in XP the problem is meanwhile solved 👍, in MSFS it (partly?) still persists. So, why should I help MS? 😜 I have already done so. Apart from that, I have contributed in other ways to the community as well, but that's a different story ... See? That's the people I like the most: moaning for the sake of moaning, but unwilling to contribute anything. Back in 2019/2020 I started using the building footprints for my XP sceneries and seeing the AI errors I had a look at commercial providers, one was asking for $0.25 per building.. so if I wanted to do this commercially using the 3rd party provider, I'd have needed several million for a single US state, it was actually cheaper to hire people to clean the data by hand. So, MS doing this for free and publishing for the community (mostly OpenStreetMap) is a really generous move from them and nice give-back to the OSM community whose data they have used as well.
