Question about 81ME, French Field Airport

Featured Replies

Is anyone else seeing this at 81ME? I did some searching but couldn't find any references made to this airport before. I know it's just an elevation glitch somewhere but I'm still curious if it's affecting just my installation or others, as well. I am running the SU14 beta but I know it was like this pre-beta. I don't have any other scenery that should be affecting this area, unless it's come from a world update that I have installed that others may not. It's been great practice for my takeoffs and landings with an obstacle, if nothing else.

I checked but this airfield seems to be missing from my MSFS installation. I can't find it in the World Map, neither as 81ME nor as "French Field".
I have all the world updates installed. Could it be an addon?

I see the same as the OP.

It does appear as a default field in Maine, I have no add ons in the area.

The Sectional lists elevation as 338', but when I start there in MSFS I am at sea level.

Yep, no addons here either. Thanks for checking!

Do you two have Navigraph? Because I have the airport as well, and according to LittleNavMap, the source of the airport data is Navigraph data.

Navigraph adds missing airports, but just the runway data.

Yes, I do have Navigraph data. That's interesting then. Does MSFS add a runway based on that data?

Out of curiosity, I checked the Bing satellite (which, I guess, is actually TomTom) and it looks like they've started construction on a runway, although I assume it's finished by now. I always assumed Google to be the more recent data but the way the area has been dug up, Bing must newer.

I do have Navigraph - I even looked at the Little NavMap and didn't snap I had the info box in the wrong selection.  I looked at the same aerial from Google Maps - AirNav lists it as "Surface:     asphalt/turf"  so it must default to the asphalt I guess.

Somehow whenever I made the effort to compare the two, Bing was newer and nicer.

Sometimes Bing is newer, sometimes Google is newer. Really depends on the country. China for example is extremely out of date on Bing.

There's also some places where google has censored airports, like LGAV in Greece, but Bing hasn't, and the reverse is true, there's a bunch of military bases censored in Germany on Bing maps that aren't censored on Google.

Any new satellite and Photogrammetry imagery that is gathered for MSFS World Updates will most of the time get ported to Bing maps as well and will be more up to date than Google, sometimes.

I don't have Navigraph so that is probably why I do not have this airport in MSFS. According to Skyvector this airport was opened in january 2022 so it is plausible MSFS does not have this in yet.

If Navigraph has added the airport it might accidentally has put it as sea level, causing MSFS to punch a hole in the world to make it happen.
