November 22, 20232 yr Scotland Tigers: UK West Coast Scotland: Loch Ryan Today we bring out the old bi-planes for a trip to the UK west coast and a visit to Scotland’s largest city: Glasgow. We actually start this trip in England, in the city of Carlisle and we’ll head almost due west to the west coast of the island of Great Britain via the English village of Kirkbride. Departing Kirkbride we’ll continue westward crossing the Solway Firth, Dumfries Channel. The middle of this firth or narrow sea inlet serves as the western border between England and Scotland. “X” marks the border and once crossed we’ll wish you a warm welcome into Scotland. The remainder of this trip will be in Scotland. As we make landfall in Arbigland, Scotland, we’ll pass the John Paul Jones Cottage Museum. John Paul Jones was a famous in the United States as the “Father of the American Navy”. He was born in poverty and through his skills became a distinguished naval officer fighting for both the USA and Russia. Jones is highly regarded as one of the greatest naval commanders in the history of the United States. We continue westward landing at airstrips at Falgunzeon and Glenswinton, Baldoon until we reach Castle Kennedy and Loch Ryan on the coast of the Irish Sea in the Firth of Clyde (bay). From here we’ll turn northward along the A77 road and head for the town of Prestwick seeing the site along the way. Then onto our final stop in the largest city in Scotland: Glasgow. (Glasgow is not the capital but it is the largest city in Scotland in all regards). Enroute to Glasgow airport, we’ll tour the east side of the Glasgow to visit some of Glasgow’s city landmarks and the River Clyde. Our trip is 161 nm with 6 intermediate stops: “a very low and slow expedition”.
