Checking VRAM

Featured Replies

Hi. I've just upgraded my graphics card to a GeForce RTX 3060 12Mb.

Using a software tool Speccy it indicates I've only got 4Mb Vram, using the DxDiag tool it indicates 12Mb. MSFS 2020 does get a bit stuttery at high intensity ie the Tornado at low level, and nightime at large airports. I was hoping for better performance than my old card with only 4Mb vram. Can anybody advise which of the two diagnostics will be more accurate Speccy or DxDiag ?

I have an Intel i7-12700k CPU and 32Gb ram.

If you know the card has 12GB of VRAM, and DxDiag sees it, I'd go with that.

A 3060 is a relatively low performance GPU these days.  The additional VRAM might help cure large stutters that would be caused by swapping video buffers to RAM (in DX11), or VRAM OOM crashes (in DX12), but it's not going to work miracles in GPU throughput.  Better GPU throughput comes from having more and faster cores in the GPU.  A 3080 from the same generation of GPUs has 2.3 times the throughput of the 3060 (30 vs 13 TFLOPS) and a current-generation 4080 Super has 4 times the throughput (52 TFLOPS).

When flying high speeds at low level, especially if you're at high resolutions (3440 x 1440 or higher), you need better than average GPU throughput to keep things smooth.

Thanks Bob. That's good information for when I win the lottery and can afford a better card, but for now I have to cut my sail to suit the cloth.
