January 25, 200818 yr The base problem is two issues.One is how a computer program / any computer program has to have clearly defined boundaries between two different areas - when we cross those weather boundaries is when the weather changes.As noted above third party folks have found ways to lessen the abruptness of those changes - but the real issue is the weather engine does not have any kind of threshold which trips a gradual transition of wind shifts.The other part of the problem is the basic way aircraft 'fly' in FS. In the real world when the aircraft crosses boundaries of wind shifts - the KIAS stays near the same. The 'ground speed' is what changes quickly.Flight Simulator works exactly backwards - the ground speed stays the same and the KIAS changes abruptly. It takes somewhere between 10 seconds and one minute for FS to recalculate everything based upon the flight dynamics and make adjustments to the ground speed to attain the previously established KIAS. If you fly with high realism settings - this can easily cause the aircraft to cross the overspeed thresholds and cause a crash.Payware third party addons are the best mitigation available - but knowledge of your flight routes is also a way to help.Long overwater routes are the worst. After a couple flights - you should be able to identify where the weather boundaries are on the route - and be prepared to modify your speed when you approach them.Yes, it sugks - but since a big part of the problem is rooted in the basic flight engine - it ain't gonna get a lot better.
January 25, 200818 yr I just turn off the "aircraft takes damage from stress" realism option and "look the other way" when the wind shear strikes.This really affects the high-flying fast-movers. The lower, slower, shorter-ranged GA aircraft usually don't have to worry about the wind shear. If you're new to Flight Sim, then this might be a new thing for you. January 25, 200818 yr (FSX+SP1 Windows Vista Ultimate)Unrealistically strong wind changes cause airspeed jumping up and down and abrupt heading changes. My "Download winds aloft" checkbox in the Options Weather tab page is unchecked, and the other checkbox that suppreses the effect of wind turbulance on aircraft does nothing to improve the unrealistically strong wind changes and the resulting airspeed jumping up and down and abrupt heading changes.Is there a way to eliminate these wind changes within FSX without installing any 3rd party software?Thank you in advance,Kerke
