November 30, 20241 yr I don't know whether you guys get this weird altimeter reading in 2024 when listening AWOS/ASOS metar. It reads six or seven digits, like "altimeter 30005016". This is never the case IRL. Always four digits like "altimeter 3005". I just flew an RNAV with G1000 C172 at night using live weather (very bad weather). I tuned and listen to AWOS at COM2 and heard sth "altimeter 3005601" and my brain registered it as 3056. I thought wow this is pretty high but set the altimeter to 30.56 anyway. G1000 AP flew the approach and glideslope and all was well. Just upon reaching MDA at 1680' all of sudden I saw trees popping right into my landing light! Right, I almost got killed... I took over and landed safely. Stopped on the runway I adjusted the altimeter to airport elevation and it's 30.05! Then I listened to AWOS again, word not allowed it was "altimeter 3005016".. 9950X3D / 64GB / RTX5090 / Pimax Crystal Light / Win11
November 30, 20241 yr The altimeter is very accurate. You need to round up or down for the correct number. 🙂
