A little trick I discovered while testing the new update.
For those wishing to fly the MAX online it's possible to tune the xpndr manually by using the vpilot shortcut.

Its a bit clunky, but it works -

Launch the sim and vpilot and select the max and get to where you are ready to input the code.

In vpilot use the "dot" command - .squawk xxxx and select. Confirm the code is set msgs.
Now in the sim, cycle the "alt src" button on the transponder from 1 to 2 and back and confirm the correct code is set.
 

Hope that helps as a workaround until an update is pushed!

I have a Stream Deck plug in I tried to get to do this, but cycling the "alt src" was the key to success on that one also.
